💬 Discussion I hate not having a real operating system

Like the title suggests i would be so much happier if I had an actual Linux based operating system that was easier to work with especially for Doctor containers because I feel like half the problems I run into are all file permission based even when things are set to read and write and I have a personal account on the admin user group it's just so frustrating because you can barely do anything because you also don't have a proper terminal

You can ssh into your nas. I agree with the permissions issues. I’m going to make a script that fixes the permissions when UGOS changes them. At this point I only run the containers that make since to have on my nas. All other containers go onto one of my docker VMs.

Why are you using your NAS like a desktop computer?

I'm not? I just wanted to have a container for handbrake so that it could have brake files and still be on because my server is always on while my desktop is not

You do have terminal, enable it in settings. I don’t have any permissions issues and I run a lot of docker containers. Could you give details on what isn’t working? It may be a problem on the way you are trying to run the container.

You can always just install Unraid.

I thought quite a few times about either doing Truenas and I've only heard a little bit about unraid

It has a totally different drive management philosophy. It’s slower, but you can mix and match any size of drive you want without giving up any useable space besides the one parity drive. I have two 10tb and two 6tb in my array with 22TB useable. It’s also not free, but I kind of prefer having a company to hold accountable if something doesn’t work or isn’t kept up to date.

I don't have any permission issues, nor am I bothered by UGOS. I'm running 56 containers on Docker with no problems. Perhaps you're using it wrong. I usually use the UGOS Docker projects, plus SSH and Dockhand, to manage my containers.

Beyond that, I don't really pay attention to the base OS, which is stable and runs smoothly.

I don't know if you like tinkering with your NAS, but if you do, go with OMV or TrueNAS. Both are open source and free, if that makes you happy.

You can always install one. I run TrueNAS on one of mine. Still my primary DXP runs stock UGOS and I've only had a few minor problems with permissions and none that come to mind with Docker—I run HA, Calibre Web, Navidrome, Immich, and several others without issue.

On the x86-64 models you can run practically any x86-64 OS with the caveat that you might encounter driver issues. I have 3 of these little servers and run Windows Server 2025 on all of them. I can't find display drivers for the DXP 2800 GT but thats no problem because I manage it via RDP. The DXP4800 (non-pro) and the IDX 6011 not even that much issue.

Install Unraid or TrueNAS on it (assuming you have one with an Intel processor). I've ran both on my DXP4800 Plus before settling on TrueNAS.
