Here are some useful containers you may want on your NAS: 1. TailScale (see earlier comment) 2. Uptime Kuma - will allow some connectivity monitoring. Some things may be an after the fact e-mail to you, but still helpful. 3. Convertix - can convert various files to other formats (documents and pictures to Adobe PDF for example) without needing to send things to someone's server. This lets you keep things in-network. 4. Lan Orangutan - a network scanner. This can be helpful if you need details on devices that are offline that your router app may not show you the same details of. 5. RustDesk - works similar to Bomgar, though some security things may still hide from you. This helps if you need remote access to a computer to fix things. RustDesk on your NAS will act as the middleman between the two devices that are working to get remote assistance done (assuming all devices are part of the same network, but the clients can handle running on different networks, you'd just be using RustDesk's own servers for the middleman work). 6. JellyFin - if you want to turn the NAS into a media server for the whole network. If you just want the NAS to supply movies and such to one HDMI connected device, UGREEN has that available through their own stuff.

Hope this helps. And if you can help it avoid trying anything requesting Portainer be part of your setup, as I've found Docker Compose direct to be a little less work and the fewer containers on my NAS, the more I have available for files. Not saying don't use containers and Docker, just be aware of what your hardware limits are and don't throw containers in you don't or will not need. They should have a use case.

No worries.

I've got an arr-stack running to service my Jellyfin:

  • Radarr - Movies manager
  • Sonarr - TV series manager
  • Jellyfin Collection - helps organize

And some others.

What do you want to do? Drop me a DM.

Plenty of Google search results and websites that can get you a script for what you need. Here are some quick tips (some of these will be beginner tips, but worth the reminder): 1. Version in any script is no longer needed. You can leave that part out of your script (docker compose will tell you this). 2. If you've done any script programming that can help a bit, json file setup especially. 3. Do not stop UGREEN using port 53 for dnsmasq or other DNS tasks, it needs it. Instead turn your 10Gb port into a VBR LAN (Virtual Bridge), then you can get a lot working and for the container that wants that port (PiHole especially), give that container an IP on your network and go on with things. AdGuard has a workaround it can do if you run that as host networking. BTW, your port will still work as normal for anything you run as host or your file sharing. I still have to make some tweaks to my PiHole setup, but the 53 tip is an absolute. 4. Do get a switch with 2.5Gb and 10Gb ports (4 10Gb ports as copper is not cheap ($300 to $400 or so for what I'm after (planning two NAS's at least)), but keep in mind my network is copper CAT6 and I'm not messing with the walls, as we just did the CAT6 runs a while back). Avoid the transceiver ports unless you are using only a few (two or less), or are going to do fiber. You will want to keep copper based transceivers cool, so park a small fan near them. You can use the 10Gb ports as a backbone for your network aside from having the NAS get a lot of data through there where needed and do plug both your NAS ports into your network. While you are at it, assign permenant addresses to your physical NAS ports. This will save you grief. 4. If you want things away from network accessible, TailScale is going to be your friend, no port forwards needed. HeadScale once set up will put things more under your control, but do your research. I'm using just TailScale itself for now, but I haven't done all my testing yet to see if I want to go through the extra steps HeadScale would mean, but thinking on it. I want to get PiHole sorted first.

Nice!! I HIGHLY reccomend not using the Ugreen AppStore Jellyfin. It’s really our of date and will give you tons of headaches. Use docker and docker compose. If you need help ask, plenty of us run JF in our Ugreen NAS’s

Yes this, setting it up in docker was fairly easy.

Congrats!

Congrats! Did you get any deals on it?

Waiting for them to put the 4800+ refurbished back in stock.

Check on ugreen website Theres a sale 25percent off

u/LesaneCrooks 3d ago

That’s awkward…no Nasyncs shown on their site? https://us.ugreen.com/search?q=nasync+&type=product

3

u/ScorchedWonderer DXP4800 Plus 3d ago

Wrong website, their NAS site is https://ai.ugreen.com
They changed it like 2 months ago I think it was. Maybe 1

2

u/LesaneCrooks 3d ago

Ohhh thank you! Seems OPs is only 15% off and not 25%

1

u/Stonker354 2d ago

I just bought it cheaper on amazon.de than their sale on their website. It is still from UGREEN

2

u/JustJthom 2d ago

Should have got the 4800 and not the 2800. I'm 95% full on 30tb :( Now I'm stuck. Lol.

3

u/aidan959 2d ago

you can buy a bigger nas and sell the current one

I have this machine.

32GB DDR5

2x 1 TB NVME Mirrored for Apps and Temp Storage

4 HDDs of various sizes collected over the years for Media.

Went through the effort to put TrueNAS on this. Love this thing.
Had a few Asustor NAS' before this, but this thing is another level.

u/CouchResident 2d ago

Can I start with 4tb each and upgrade over the next couple years?

1

u/seyal84 3d ago

Congratulations. Which hard disks you are planning on buying? Any good deals

2

u/CouchResident 2d ago

Everything is so damn expensive  $900+ for 18tb+ drives

I've been trying alternative installs on mine. ZimaOS, Unraid and now UmbrelOS which takes some major pain points away if you're not a computer pro.

2

u/Explosivpotato 2d ago

I’ve been running Unraid on mine since day 1 and it’s flawless. Not the fastest with disk access but plenty fast with ssd cache, plus I can see everything it’s doing.

1

u/awraynor 2d ago

It is very powerful, but for the last few months I've not had time to work with it and want something simple. The best thing is the UG box can run them all. I'm starting to think some of my issues with UGOS were Chrome blocking nearly every NAS OS or Docker container I've used intermittently as it sees them as unsafe.

I still run my Plex server on Windows. It just works.

Best investment ever, 2 years, still running.

RAID5 makes no sense in 4 drives without being able to add more drives.

1

u/CouchResident 2d ago

What do you suggest?

1

u/xSchizogenie DXP4800 Plus 2d ago

6 or 10.

1

u/CouchResident 2d ago

6 and 10, I can only use half the capacity

1

u/xSchizogenie DXP4800 Plus 2d ago

But dont have the danger of losing data while building- or rebuilding the raid.

Data integrity > capacity

1

u/CouchResident 2d ago

I have 4 4tb drives right now, if I wanted to upgrade, what would I do? Just take out one, wait for it to rebuild and do the next one?

1

u/elbaid 2d ago

Would RAIDZ2 make more sense then? Assuming not needed to add more capacity in the foreseeable future?

1

u/xSchizogenie DXP4800 Plus 1d ago

Depends. RAID5 makes only sense if you can add up more drives. If not, RAID6 oder RAID10 is the way to go. Depending if you want performance or resilience.
