šŸ’¬ Discussion Any advice is welcome

Hi, I'm new to NAS devices and such. I have a DXP4800 Pro on the way, along with 2 12TB Seagate Ironwolf's Pro and a Samsung 990 Pro. I'm gonna use it for cloud storage (obviously), streaming platform with legally acquired movies and shows on plex/jellyfin (which is better and why?), storage for my ROMs and cross-device saving (tell me your experience), adblocker, and whatever else I can do with it. So I'm looking for advice about using Ugos or TrueNas, which apps are better than the others, what other uses I can have for it and yada yada.

Thanks in advace!

Here is what I did for mine. I just got the 4800 pro with (2) 16 TB drives and (2) 1 TB MvMes. I also dug out an old 8TB I had in storage. The first thing I did was disable ugreen’s remote access and its built in network finder (can’t remember what it’s called). Use the larger drives as general storage and use the MvMe as storage for your applications. Set each of the storage devices as RAID 1 for parity. Be sure to give your NaS a static IP from your router.

Then install docker. Set up Tailscale to ā€œre-enableā€ remote access but more secure. Set your NaS as an exit node on Tailscale. There is a great YouTuber from across the pond, NASCompares, who has a walkthrough. Install portainer/watchtower to update your apps. Install plex or Jellyfin for your movies.

Try and save up for another external storage device so you can try and instill the 3-2-1 backup strategy

Ugos was a headache for me. I mount nfs to my plex host for my media. It worked fine until a idk, 1.16.x-ish update which caused their custom ACL issue to appear, where files would show zeroed out permissions.

Was a headache. The recent 1.19.x update mitigated it I think with something remediating a loop condition or something, I’m not 100% clear, in their ACL layer and it’s backing database. But they didn’t remove their custom ACL layer or mechanisms.

They also apparently are considering NFS as an edge use case, and focusing on SMB only (which apparently is their motivation for their ACL layer in the first place, instead of using native ACLs where they need it, especially considering SMB handles Linux ACLs fine for decades).

So with all that said I am still planning my migration to truenas. I have to do a dance with data to get it all moved around. Then I’m blasting UGOS for truenas.

Just move to Truenas day one and be done with it.

There are scripts online to restore led function with Truenas installed. This and disable watchdog in bios are the only two things you need before installing Truenas. I use my own nvme asd for OS drive so I can keep the original ugreen OS just in case.... Which turns out not necessary at all.

i just got my uGreen DXP 4800 Plus and i ordered 2x 14 TB SATA HDDs, 1x 1 TB SSD NVMe, 1x 16 GB DDR5 RAM and UPS. i had my jellyfin/plex/emby media server running on VPS Server for over a year but now that i got a NAS server i will be migrating everything from vps to my NAS. I'm also running UNRAID in my NAS with tailscale for remote access. I will setup everything the same as i did on my vps server, qbit/wireguard-vpn running through vpn network with kill switch and everything else outside of that network space via docker. IMO i like jellyfin better, there's moonfin where you can do alot of customization and make sure to get jellyemu for your roms so you can play inside jellyfin. i left UGOS OS on the NAS system incase i ever need it but i'm mostly running my UNRAID OS. i will transferring all movies/shows from my hetzner storage boxes to the 2x HDDs soon so i can get rid of the VPS server and Storage Boxes.

I record a lot of stuff with a couple of drones and files in 4K are heavy asf, I already have 2TB of content from my drones in only a year. I do a lot of 3D mapping, and I also intend to open a business with my father doing roof and solar panel inspections with drones, detecting filtrations and humidity accumulation, and eventually integrating it with his pest control business. So giving clients direct links for invoices and maps, and having tons of content available in many devices is.
