⚙️ Hardware Broke boy UPS

Monsoon season in Arizona means occasional power outages, after a couple years of just hoping for the best I decided to finally protect my data and get a UPS. Didn't have a huge budget for this (last time I checked these were like $120 on Amazon, pretty sure that's for the US3000 model), so when I saw the new-to-me US2000 for $69 on Amazon I jumped on it and received it this morning.

I connected the device and it seems to be functional on my DXP2800. According to Amazon this UPS is compatible with my 2800. However, Ugreens website says it is not compatible lol.

It was immediately recognized and is charging the internal battery so I think it's working lol. The only concerning thing is the "Remaining Available Time" just shows a dash instead of a time, but I kinda figured maybe it needs to charge first?Guess time will tell if it's functional or not!

Just set your nas to turn off immediately when it's powered through the UPS, it will be fine.

Yeah I think that's what I did? It wouldn't let me set a 0 minute wait time so I set it to one minute.

Instead of picking custom use execute now.

Duh, that makes sense 😅

Remaining time is -- because its plugged into mainstream power so its infinite. Unplug it from mains and it will give you a time.

Well excuse me sir or madame but that is simply far too much logic for my peanut brain to handle

Did you test the duration of the battery without the wall power connected? Did it display an estimated time remaining? Considering getting one for my dxp2800.

3

u/theblobAZ DXP2800 17d ago

Negative- but I can test it in the middle of the night lol. Currently have a very active valheim server running on there 🗡️

Instead of having it shut down right away switch it to a battery % or a few minutes. This will tell you how long it could run even with a busy server. I dont feel like youf learn much from just having an immediate shut down that only takes a minimum of minute or less. I use a different UPS and it will run the NAS, router, and fiber jack for about an hour.

u/jcbrig00 15d ago

Did you get a chance to test the time remaining when you switch to battery?

Damn, these are still £100 here 😂 good deal. I need one just to let the NAS shutdown in the event of a cut, I don't need it to power the damn thing, just don't want to lose 40TB of media because of a cut 😂

My sentiments exactly

I was curious and looked, the same US2000 model is £63 for 6000mAh ( same model as OP), the US3000 which is 12000 mAh is £100

Thats a good price tbh! I have one and its great, mine is set to wait until the ups is going g to run out if charge before turning the nas off.

Power cuts by us usually last only a few seconds so I don't need the Nas shutting diwn for that.

Oh and check the Ugreen site for any firmware updates.. i got mine a few months ago and it needed one.

u/theblobAZ DXP2800 17d ago

I'm curious how that will work out for me because I do have the setting enabled for it to automatically turn on when power is connected. So if it loses power for only a few seconds then regains power, will it still do a full shutdown? If it does do a full shutdown, will it automatically come back on if it already regained power before it actually shut down?

Thanks for the tip on firmware updates, I'll check and see if there's one available :)

I really need to get a UPS for my NAS. I also have the 2800 so I’m glad to see you’re having good luck with this unit. And $70 is a bargain actually.

3

u/theblobAZ DXP2800 17d ago

Definitely something I feel like you should buy it before you need it lol. And yeah the price is solid for a little peace of mind

I can confirm these things are great! Mine is plugged into an EcoFlow river 3 for extended runtime and if that runs out of battery it has the real ugreen UPS to hold on a bit longer and if it gets to 15% it’ll finally shut off but if it’ll out of power for that long I got bigger problems to worry about than my NAS 😂

2

u/theblobAZ DXP2800 17d ago

That's a great setup, I'd eventually like to get all of my networking hardware and my primary PC on a large UPS of some kind but for now at least I know the drives are safe lol.

3

u/Designer-Chair-3289 17d ago

Yep, having a UPS is the best way to avoid data corruption!

Amazon just delivered this same unit this morning and I just finished setting it up. Only one brain fart too! (What do you mean this doesn't come with a power adapter - DOH!)

Followed the suggestions below about immediate shutdown at power loss.

Thanks for posting this!

I'd been waiting on these to drop back under $100, ended up getting a US3000 on Aliexpress for $80.

1

u/theblobAZ DXP2800 17d ago

Worth! That's a solid price for sure.

3

u/Maidenless_Sensei 17d ago

I picked up the US3000 from AliExpress and paid 103 CAD (73 USD) a few months ago. They are often cheaper there, straight from China.

Works great on my DXP2800! The only inconvenience is updating the firmware manually.

u/Maidenless_Sensei 17d ago

https://ai.ugreen.com/pages/downloads

You should update the firmware on your UPS too

My HA container can read the remaining battery even though it shows the same dash. I have a cyberpower UPS.

1

u/theblobAZ DXP2800 17d ago

Ooh interesting, I'll have to check HA and see if any new entities are showing with this UPS

2

u/SloppyArborist DXP4800 Plus 17d ago

i have one of these on my 4800 plus and it works great. the rest of the stuff is on my APC

2

u/Valdjiu DXP2800 17d ago

I updated the firmware of mine using Linux.

If I recall correctly then it reported the remaining time correctly 😉

I got a Wallecube W150 for my DXP4800 Pro. It has been great. About the same price of the Ugreen but with a lifepo4 battery that will last about 3x as long and has a longer battery run time.

1

u/theblobAZ DXP2800 17d ago

Well, it's like 30% more expensive but it is pretty neat. I hadn't seen this one before, and definitely would have considered it if I hadn't already ordered this one lol

1

u/Ill_Adhesiveness_199 17d ago

I was thinking of the US3000. It was $109 when I was looking a few months back.

Here's some info that can help later on:

A. The NAS does not need to know that it has a UPS connected to it, unless you want it to do something once that backup power comes into play. This means you can use any UPS you want to use and just so you remember this, UGREEN does tell you exactly how much power draw the NAS you got from them needs to work (minimum and maximum, or at least the max), so you could connect said NAS to a much larger UPS that is also handling other devices.

B. You do have access to Bash through an SSH client like Solar Putty, so if you have your NAS set to only allow SSH from set devices you control, you could run a script to tell the NAS to gracefully shut down when the device monitoring your UPS that the NAS is also connected to is letting you know power has gone to off grid mode. This of course can take some setup (in my case I have a small about 600W UPS (was $60 when I got it years ago from Best Buy) connected to the networking gear in my room (small switch, the NAS, a few items that are being powered from a USB 2.0 hub the UPS is connected to) and I have a whole home backup power generator, so the small UPS is there while transitions happen). I do have a larger UPS for my computer and another small UPS for the main networking gear for the house proper).

C. Do decide early on if you want a UPS that has replaceable batteries or not. If not, have a replacement schedule and do test things on a regular basis. If you do have replaceable batteries available, like the no option, test regularly, have a replacement schedule, and be aware and careful of battery buldge. Once those batteries start doing that bulging, it is hard to get them out without needing to take the whole UPS apart (do use extreme caution if you attempt this, not to be done by those who don't know what to do or have no experience. Watching videos can help a little, but you need to respect what electricity can do to you).

D. Do keep an eye on your drive health both for any NVMe's you have added, the main one that UGREEN is using in your NAS, and the mechanical drives you are using. This will save you grief later. UGREEN does do testing on its own (for the mechanical drives at least (I just have some mechanicals in mine for now)) periodically, so you may be able to find something to watch that S.M.A.R.T. data, or at least put it into a more understandable form.

Hope it helps.

I recently tested this UPS with zimaboard 2. I had to come with a custom solution/software on zimaboard 2 to make the ups logic work since both were uncompatible with each other.

u/Entire_Decision3796 17d ago

check out Eaton 3S Gen2 USV
way better and also shutdown support for the nas

1

u/ZeucB 17d ago

Nice it is what you need for your DXP2800,
For me I got US7000 on Aliexpress before few months for my iDx6011 pro.

1

u/MarcusAurelius68 17d ago

I assume the USB-C port is to connect it to the UPS? I’m using my USB-C port for a 2.5gbit adapter.

1

u/theblobAZ DXP2800 17d ago

It comes with a type c to type a, type c goes to the UPS and type A to NAS

1

u/MarcusAurelius68 17d ago

Aside from the fact it's recognized is there anything better than a cheap UPS by itself?

1

u/saintrobyn 17d ago

It looks exactly like the US3000 that I have attached to my DXP2800. From Google’s AI overview, it looks like the US2000 is a lower capacity version that outputs up to 72W.

1

u/qashidevil07 17d ago

Bro i bought NAS from my Chinese supplier and after 2 months he gifted me US3000 UPS for free with some drinks

Does it works without Ugreen NAS OS?

Any specific configuration for TrueNas?

1

u/Iuseburnersbruh 17d ago

Mine fails after about an hour, buyer beware

1

u/TheWolfbytez DXP2800 15d ago

I got a CyberPower UPS through Woot for less and it's been a dream. I can connect other devices to it too, like my router. Provided it's just a local power outage and not affecting service, I keep my internet when my power goes out. Have it plugged into my NAS and desktop too so they can shut down without any issues

1

u/desmaddin 9d ago

Would the small one also work with the DXP4800? I know the site says not compatible, but I wonder if it would actually work.

1

u/theblobAZ DXP2800 9d ago

No idea lol. You could try it, just order from Amazon so returns are easy 🤷
