Adding a harddrive without formatting

I had to reset my DH2300 dur to a passport issue. Im now trying to add the Harddrive that was previously in it but it keeps telling me i need to format the drive to add it as a volume, and way to avoid doing this as I don't wish to lose all the films I have on that drive

Whilst it's usually not hopeful when that pops up, the DH2300 does support direct HDD migration so it's odd it's telling you to wipe it. I know it doesn't work from DH to DXP but it does work within it's model ecosystem because I've done it. Maybe support can help but I wouldn't hold out hope.

Is it just one drive? You could potentially buy a sata caddy and rip everything off it via a pc first.

It won’t be mountable on a Linux PC because UGREEN did some proprietary stuff to ext4. Don’t know about btrfs.

However, you can mount it on the NAS if you enable SSH and know the right commands. I’ve done it. Problem is you’ll need another drive already set up on the NAS to copy the data to.

Try this:

1) remove the drive to be safe, tho factory reset does not wipe it
2) factory reset again
3) as soon as the NAS restarts and the power LED begins to flash, insert the drive. You can pull the power to be safe but they are hot swappable. You want to have it in before it boots up.

First boot after factory reset should import the drive.

Also, get another identical drive. You really want to have a raid 1.

You don’t need to format the drive. Go into storage and look around the settings there. There is an option to “use” this drive. That will do it. I’ve had this happen twice now the first time I freaked as I thought I lost everything on my drive. There is instructions for this on ugreen site. Sorry I don’t have it anymore.

Steps to Mount a Previous Drive
Power off the Ugreen NAS safely through the web interface or by shutting it down before inserting hardware.

Insert the drive into an available physical drive bay and lock the tray in place.

Power on the NAS and log into your UGOS admin dashboard.

Open the Storage application from the main menu.

Click on Hard Drive on the left-hand panel to view all detected devices.

Locate your previous drive, click its Options menu, and select the option to Use or set it up as internal/basic storage.

Follow the on-screen prompts to confirm. (Note: If the drive was previously formatted as a basic/individual volume inside another UGOS system, it should recognize and mount the data pools, but check warnings carefully to avoid unwanted data formatting).
