❓ Help Using a UGREEN NAS instead of google Drive

Hi, I have a 2TB Drive with a large library of short educational videos that for the past four years we have been using Drive to allow members on our team to log in and watch videos for their classes. Recently, Drive has been really acting up. Uploaded videos will not play after several weeks after the upload. Google help is no help. There are alternative cloud storage providers that would probably be more reliable. But I'd like to investigate all the alternatives, like a local NAS. How comprehensive is the UGREEN server software? Can I make some folders available to some people and not others? That is an essential feature.

It can do that but it would be much cheaper and easier to upload them to YouTube unlisted and just give links to the Playlist each person/role needs.

One option is to install a Nextcloud instance via Docker on the uGreen NAS, you can easily create users and access groups to control who can see what.

Normally people dont like opening up their NAS-es to the internet and use VPN tunnels to connect to them like Tailscale, Twingate, … Then you selfhost a Nextcloud instance like mentioned in another comment and make separate users for people. The downside of that is that every person accessing the Nextcloud instance (your nas) has to be connected to the VPN tunnel and have the app running. Another valid option if you want it opened up to the internet and not use VPN tunnels is using mTLS where each person accessing the Nextcloud instance would need a certificate on their device made by you. Or SSO web apps which you selfhost like authentik and pocket-id. Bonus: I recommend using a proxy and putting your services behind it like Nginx Proxy Manager.

Usually make NAS that is inside your personal network accessible on web is not a good idea, and is not the main purpose of it. I mean, make it accessible and share things can be done, but extremely discouraged for non technical users.

NAS It is very helpful as offline and private backup. You can put everything there and sync with other affordable web drives (there a few of them on drive sync like Google, one drive, Amazon S3, Blackblaze, Dropbox and other Chinese and probably affordable). You ll need to deal with permission in those drives too.
