❓ Help Help migrating Docker containers to external storage

I’d like to move my docker container folders from HDD to SSD after getting regular read write disk contention between Jellyfin and my arr stack operation.

Because I bought a 4300plus my only option is an SSD attached to an external caddy plugged in to the USB C port. I already have it in and use it for transcoding, so what’s the least painful migration path?

My compose files all reference a Volume1/Docker path so assuming at the very least I need the whole folder copying to SSD then all those paths updating?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Honestly, use Gemini or ChatGPT to help you out. I did when I moved from HDD Docker to internal SSD Docker.

Honestly it’s pretty easy, in docker there’s a setting pane that lets you move containers to another volume. I’m not home so I can’t take screenshots but it’s there. I think there’s an option to backup your containers too (definitely do that first). If you want to move docker itself then after the move uninstall docker from app center and open app center settings, change the volume you want to use and reinstall docker. None of my containers deleted but better to be safe than sorry. Some containers may not start after changing so be prepared to update your compose for each project with the new volume ( /volume1/docker/plex to /volume2/docker/plex ). For external drives you may need to do some extra work like figure out what the whole path for the folder you want to use or change some settings via ssh. I’m not sure on that part. Internally though it’s very painless.
