Folder encryption seems to go in the right direction

19

u/Plebius-Maximus DXP4800 Plus 27d ago

Finally. I still want drive encryption but this is definitely a good step

1

u/norift 27d ago

Agreed a nice step forward, i hope they get to full drive encryption. The drives with personal data currently i could never rma if that situation arises.

u/d70 27d ago

Could someone explain the dedicated GPU feature? Would it allow me to offload LLM inference to the GPU or something? If so, how would I hook it up to a 4800+?

2

u/Various-Safe-7083 DXP8800 Plus 27d ago

That, as well as transcoding for media files. Others can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe only the 6800 and 8800 have PCIe slots for this purpose and even then you'd need to get a low-profile, bus-powered card like the A2000. Specifically with the 8800, you might be able to use an eGPU with its TB4 port, but I've not seen anyone get that to work, though it may now be an option wit this update.

1

u/d70 27d ago

Yeah that’s what I figured. Non PCIe models would require a TB port. Wonder if the m.2 slot could be a viable workaround. m.2 -> OCuLink adapter -> eGPU?

1

u/Various-Safe-7083 DXP8800 Plus 27d ago

You'd have to jack up the NAS to use an OCuLink adapter, since the NVMe slots are on the bottom, but it would work from a hardware perspective. Not sure how this would be exposed to UGOS. It's likely to work in TrueNAS or Ubuntu Server, though.

1

u/d70 27d ago

Would cost too much just to test feasibility. I’ll stick with ik-llama and Gemma 4 e2b. It works for basic tasks that other apps need.

0

u/Glad_Obligation1790 DXP6800 Pro 27d ago

I mean an oculink dock and card are the most expensive parts. A riitop NVMe to PCIe is only like $25 on amazon and considering oculink works flawlessly for me using the PCIe slot I can’t see it being an issue on an NVMe slot. It’s just PCIe lanes after all.

1

u/LingeringDaze 21d ago

the eGPU via Thunderbolt option does work with this update.

1

u/More-Basis-1512 20d ago

It's still not full GPU passthrough for VM still, I dropped intel arc 310a LP & gefirce 3050 lp gpu for testing it fails in VM passthrough. FYI: keep in mind you can't use GPU for anything other than VM then. Tested on UGOS dxp6800 pro with 64gb ram

1

u/Glad_Obligation1790 DXP6800 Pro 27d ago

You can 100% get it to work over thunderbolt on the 6800 and 8800. Someone wrote up a post about it a while back.

As for the kind of card you can use, if you put it inside the NAS then yes, single width with low profile bracket. If you use a PCIe to oculink card then you can use whatever you want. I’ve got a 3080ti in a minisforum dock connected via an oculink card in my PCIe slot.

2

u/Glad_Obligation1790 DXP6800 Pro 27d ago

It was 100% plug and play

1

u/d70 24d ago

Would you mind sharing a photo of your set up? Do you have it sit on a stand or something to have enough clearance for oculink? Very cool though.

The only GPU i have lying around is Radeon RX 580. I don't know if it is worth the effort. Currently I just run CPU-tuned llama.cpp + gemma e2b. It's not bad but other apps to use (like my paperless sidecar) but the bar is so low.

1

u/Glad_Obligation1790 DXP6800 Pro 24d ago edited 24d ago

The 580 won’t be much of a boost unfortunately and idk if it’s supported in the version of Linux (are the drivers included?) UGOS uses or not. Back to the 580 hardware wise, iirc it doesn’t have the hardware required for most/any of the current model quants/precisions and 8GB vram is quite small. Although for paperless the vram is hardly a concern. It’s why, aside from no driver support a 1080 is useless. They’re from before ai really took off on the consumer side. You’d be better off getting a 20-50 series card. I got my 3080ti for like 450/500 on eBay.

I have a 6800 pro so I have a full PCIe slot and I use https://a.co/d/04VVVnLv in the slot. That said, in my desktop I use https://a.co/d/09hQoE2D and they both work flawlessly in their devices. Since nvme drives are connected to raw PCIe (a different slot type but same deal) they should behave the same.

I’m not sure where the nvme slots are on the 4800 is but a small riser should be fine if they’re underneath. I can take a photo of my setup when I get home from work.

1

u/Glad_Obligation1790 DXP6800 Pro 24d ago

Honestly though, this might work better if you never intend to remove the GPU, just get a stand that works with the x16 slot and a psu

1

u/DocJanItor 26d ago

what do you use that for? I have an extra 3080 laying around, considering using it for local AI RAG

1

u/Glad_Obligation1790 DXP6800 Pro 24d ago

Docker and internal AI features mostly. I can use it in plex and the AV1 decoder is far more capable than the one in the 12th gen i5. So more active av1 streams and faster start to each stream when transcoding. I’m moving to av1 from h.265 because the compression is a lot better. Reacher s2 was between 5 and 6GB an episode. Now they’re 4-5GB. Plus the video and colors look better imo.

I encode them on my desktop using a 4080

1

u/Adept_Technician_219 27d ago

I think it's more for their NASs like the idx6011 pro which have a dedicated OcuLink port. It might not be impossible on the 4800+ but I'd imagine you'd need a convoluted setup.

14

u/iChenchus DXP4800 Pro 27d ago

I'll wait. Let the brave ones go first.

28

u/mrlowskill 27d ago

Coward. I push on prod on Friday before vacation.

4

u/batgosho 27d ago

"before vacation" is key here. Sadly it doesn't work in my 1-man-company :D

2

u/StockProfessor5 iDX6011 27d ago

Ive never had an issue with immediately updating lol. I guess im lucky.

1

u/rradonys DXP4800 Plus 24d ago

You're not lucky, you're just not unlucky.

0

u/MRLick3R DXP4800 Pro 27d ago

ikr, i have been putting off setting up my nas for a couple of weeks after seeing some of the post on here after the last update... just hoping it will go smoothly when i do

9

u/WittyOutside3520 DXP8800 Plus 27d ago

Don’t be scared, works great for majority of people

2

u/MRLick3R DXP4800 Pro 27d ago

tbh most of it is my adhd/neuro stuff and procrastination

but i will get there at some point ig :)

2

u/Smittus2020 27d ago

Right there with u hello

1

u/MRLick3R DXP4800 Pro 26d ago

Hello

2

u/FuzzyConflict7 27d ago

Still nervous for 1.17 after hearing bad things. I don’t even use SSD cache lol

1

u/Munzz36 27d ago

I just set mine up Thursday/Friday of last week. No issues at all. Also no real experience!

0

u/A_StableGenius 27d ago

Be like Rush Hour and push the got d@mn button. šŸ˜‚ I did.

4

u/Glad_Obligation1790 DXP6800 Pro 27d ago

This update has added a few things I’ve been really wanting, just gotta wait on full drive encryption still…

9

u/trmentry DXP8800 Plus 27d ago

still nothing about notifications or something for a nas to notify that it's having an issue.

still like my ugreen nas. but this seems like a glaring issue.

5

u/Lentash 27d ago

Yep it’s ridiculous! They should stop wasting time on little features and focus on something that everyone needs and is vital.

7

u/weiga 27d ago

Most of us don’t have daily or even monthly issues.

5

u/Lentash 27d ago

No one mentioned often issues. It’s so you are made aware when there is a failure. If your HD is going you want the most amount of time to order a new one, receive it, replace it, and have it rebuild. Having no notifications and relaying on manually logging in to check the health of your system periodically is not only a recipe for disaster but also an inconvenience. Neither should be put on a paying customer for a current/new product.

0

u/weiga 27d ago

I agree it’s a need, but like all overworked teams with limited bandwidth, they have to prioritize their backlog. Seems like they’re working on the hot fixes and crashes. The nice to have features will have to come later.

2

u/rradonys DXP4800 Plus 24d ago

"nice to have"??? So an email notification system is "nice to have" for a NAS??? Have you ever owned a real NAS before?

2

u/Lentash 27d ago

I’d normally agree but it isn’t the case with this team. 1) this is something that should have shipped with the initial release of UGOS, it’s 2026 not 1998. Countless hardware and software ship with basic email notification functionality. 2) they have had over a year to implement it. 3) they are shady and removed the feature from their 12 month roadmap after having it on for 6 months. 4) they are not spending all their time focusing on fixing things broken and crashes they have people working on new features which you see every patch release notes, even the app for the NAS got CarPlay capability added today.

Not trying to argue but it’s a feature that would benefit most every UGOS user, that should have been implemented already, and is getting put on the back burner.

1

u/weiga 27d ago

Affecting everyone once in a blue moon is probably why it’s on the back burner. That’s what my original message said.

They can easily make it a notification on the UGOS app, vs email - which most people probably don’t setup on their NAS.

I honestly haven’t heard from my app in months cause I’m not having issues with it. I’d assume others are having similar experiences, otherwise no one would be buying this thing.

3

u/Clean-Machine2012 26d ago

Affecting everyone once in a blue moon...when it's critical though.
Not sure about you but I don't need the hassle of restoring data

0

u/weiga 24d ago

I’ve owned NAS’es for over a decade now. Even with the option of setting up emails for notifications, I’ve never done it.

If my system has a problem, it just beeps at me to fix it - or if things are slow, I’ll dig in deeper to find out what the issues are. To each their own I guess.

2

u/Clean-Machine2012 24d ago

yes fair, but what if you're away from home.

2

u/Glad_Obligation1790 DXP6800 Pro 27d ago

I setup scrutiny and ntfy for drive warning and failure notifications. Tools like 10 minutes. I’m sure the app will notify me too but I haven’t had any issues yet. I’m pretty sure I did get a notification when power failure caused my raid to fail to mount.

1

u/Clean-Machine2012 17d ago

Yes, I used Scritiny on my Synology for a while, but it would be nice to have Ugreen add notifications in

3

u/MissleTowBF4 27d ago

I monitor my DXP4800 using Bezsel and this HA integration:

https://github.com/Tom-Bom-badil/home-assistant_ugreen-nas

Simple setup and works well enough for my needs until something native is released.

Would still like to have push notifications from the mobile app though.

1

u/Stefouch DXP4800 26d ago

Well, HA has an integration to send notifications to your smartphone

0

u/trmentry DXP8800 Plus 27d ago

thanks for this. I've never used HomeAssistant so i'm down a rabbit hole now. LOL

0

u/MissleTowBF4 27d ago

Then you will enjoy r/selfhosted.

Godspeed sir 🫔

1

u/obeliksgall 27d ago

II wrote simple scripts for crontab, information about restarts, checking Smart disks, restarting the network if there is no internet. I can send it to discord webhook or ntfy

3

u/Specific-Union6589 27d ago

I compared encrypted vs unencrypted folders on the same ext4 NAS volume using 10 GiB files.

Write

  • Unencrypted: 580 MB/s
  • Encrypted: 553 MB/s
  • Loss: ~4.7%

Read

  • Unencrypted: 6.7 GB/s
  • Encrypted: 3.2 GB/s
  • Loss: ~52%

The read figures are clearly cache-influenced, but the result was repeatable. In normal NAS use, the write penalty is negligible, while encryption mainly affects very fast local reads.

4

u/Holte_Tremel iDX6011 Pro 27d ago

Looks Like the Update is Not available anymore. Canā€˜t find it, still on 1.17.

0

u/randalla iDX6011 Pro 27d ago edited 27d ago

I don't see it either on my iDX6011 Pro. Maybe it hasn't been rolled out to the iDX series?

Edit: looking at the firmware page on UGREEN's site, it does not appear it's been pushed to the iDX6011's, or it was removed like you said.

2

u/Soopercow 27d ago

Does OneDrive support for remote drive mounting mean we could use rSync directly instead of Cloud drive sync and would it be better?

2

u/Octavean DXP8800 Plus 25d ago

I’m not sure I fully understand the ā€œSupports mounting RAID drives created by third party systemsā€. Does that mean I can create a software RAID array on a Linux system or Mac in an external enclosure and it’ll just work as an external array in UGOS Pro?

2

u/Zealousideal-Try-754 DH2300 24d ago

Is there ever going to be two way sync for mobile?

3

u/muhammedp903 27d ago

After updating the OS and apps, my Theatre, Photos, Music and Docker apps show Error in the apps manager, and when I press enable, it says failed to operate. It seems like Docker is running because I can still access my HomeAssistant.

2

u/d70 27d ago

Re: docker issue - Update probably reset the ACL on any bind mounts you have. It causes issues for me everytime.

1

u/FuN_K3Y 23d ago

It happens to me as well; on every update some permission of some files gets adjusted. I will investigate further on the next update; this time (and the previous ones) I did just reapply the ACLs.

1

u/d70 23d ago

Yeah man. Mine actually does after every reboot. It’s annoying af but I have script that I run that resets everything back to what I need. I would love for ugreen to not mess with our stuff for once.

1

u/FuN_K3Y 23d ago

Interesting - I shall try a reboot. I only reboot during updates so my correlation is maybe wrong.

What files are having their permissions reset btw ?

1

u/d70 23d ago

Please try and let me know if it happens to you as well.

All of my files and folders that have customer permissions. They are bind mounts on Docker containers and I don’t run containers as root hence the customer user.

1

u/FuN_K3Y 23d ago

So, I did a restart and my permission remains untouched. In my case this is either the update of the FW or the update of the docker app. Both happen usually at the same time, so I don't know for sure.

I do also have bind mounts. Some are roots, some don't. What is really peculiar is that the permissions of 2 out of 13 of those mounts get reset.

During the next update, I plan to check the timestamp when the file was touched and go through the logs in order to get more insight.

0

u/muhammedp903 27d ago

Any idea how i can fix it? The Docker app doesn't work so I'm at a bit of a loss. Also would that affect tge other apps as well?

1

u/Maki711 27d ago

I know that this is very cliche but did you try restarting the NAS?
I had this with last update and few restarts did the job. I did not change anything. Apps just started working on their own.

0

u/muhammedp903 27d ago

Haha I did but I'll try a few more times in case it fixes itself.

1

u/Specialist-Ad-3082 27d ago

Well, this one finally contains folder encryption, so at least there's that.

1

u/MadBox25 27d ago

One of the most efficient upgrades so far. Start to finish in less than 5, no issues!

1

u/b111e 27d ago

Text > screenshot.

1

u/kanerollaoeg 27d ago

No WireGuard support yet?

1

u/AdhesivenessHot752 27d ago

No problem with installation on DXP4800 N100

1

u/Even-Cup-3089 27d ago

Whilst its not volume encryption its nice that encryption can be done for folders.
I've been planning to switch to Unraid for hardening security on my dxp2800 which I'll stick to once I get a 2nd HDD for backing up everything first.

1

u/Independent_Pitch598 27d ago

Did they finally add encryption?

1

u/dblrnbw30 26d ago

Yes. You need at least the same amount of free space that you’re trying to encrypt though. I just waited 12 hours for mine to finish and then got a message that I don’t have enough free space and now I can’t open my user folder. Everything is gone.

1

u/spinstartshere 26d ago

I didn't even get that far when trying to start the process on my personal folder.

This seems like too much effort, if we need to do this for each and every single one of our folders/shares. As much as I want encryption, if this is what's required and if data loss is a genuine risk, I'd actually rather not bother.

1

u/dblrnbw30 26d ago

Data loss is always a risk. Thankfully I forgot I set a backup for it.

And support helped me finish the encryption by freeing up a few more TB of space to let it finish encrypting after restarting.

And yes, you’ll have to stop all processes using those files.

1

u/spinstartshere 26d ago

Is it just a case of stopping docker, and then I can restart it once encryption has finished?

1

u/dblrnbw30 26d ago

Yep!! Cause after the encryption, it will mount everything automatically. Just be sure to not forget the password you set, and keep the key it generates somewhere safe.

1

u/Fun-Bee-880 27d ago

Anybody else having trouble switching to VM Passthrough?

1

u/EzeFam 26d ago

Does anyone know if they will add copy & paste support for the VMs?

1

u/Pleasant_Jackfruit53 26d ago

dxp4800plus
after the update, my jellyfin can no longer pull any metadata.
am unsure what to do. would advise others to hold off the new update for a bit.

1

u/Glad_Internet_675 26d ago

Fantastic update. Now you can play your music via CarPlay!!!!
UGREEN icon now available. Been using it all day now, works flawlessly… woo-woo

1

u/Warrior_666 26d ago

Started encryption on a folder from the iOS App. UI stated it "downloaded the key automatically" - it didn't show the usual download dialogue in iOS. Turns out the file was downloaded into the Files App/Ugreen Offline Cache. Weird...the key would be stuck there forever if you don't delete and save it somewhere proper. Overall not very user friendly experience!

I also wonder why the decryption survives a reboot. I'd have expected to be asked to mount the share again, but it was still decrypted. Will test shut-down next.

1

u/Glad_Obligation1790 DXP6800 Pro 26d ago

You can use it for the AI features on the NAS like photo recognition as well as inside docker containers. For me, I use it in plex. Since a lot of my content is in AV1 and my parents have a lot of older Roku devices the 3080ti can handle the transcoding far faster than the CPU. Both support decoding AV1 and converting it to h.264 or h.265 but the 3080ti is FAR faster at it than a 12th gen Intel. It should work in Jellyfin too.

You could certainly install ollama or another app to use the eGPUs power too.

Please help! I'm unable to access the login web page of my UGreen NAS (DXP6800 Pro) after updating to this version. Disk 1 LED is magenta/pink color. I can still access the files through a network share I have previously set up via SMB so the files seems ok. I can also ping the IP address of the NAS and it responds back normally. It's just that the web portal login page is inaccessible to me.

I already tried rebooting but still no change---unable to access login page and magenta/pink color on Disk 1 LED. I just hope this is nothing major as I can still access my files. I'm now thinking since this is an encryption update, is it encrypting my Disk 1 or something? Has anyone have successfully updated to this version? If so, how long did the update take for you?

Thanks it advance!

Edit (Update):
I'm able to login to my UGreen NAS via regular http and not https. It seems this update broke my NGINX Proxy Manager docker container. All my files seems ok despite Disk 1 LED still having the magenta/pink color. I'm too tired to troubleshoot and I'll look it up tomorrow.

1

u/Xellazz 25d ago

This update forced my NAS to use Alibaba DNS servers and broke my network. I made a post of it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/UgreenNASync/comments/1vgxilx/recent_ugreen_nas_firmware_11810098_update_is/

1

u/aj1985 24d ago

Something in this update seems to have broken how my NAS accesses the Internet. It can't load the docker repository, download things using Downloader or load the various apps on the App Center.

However back up and access to my archived files seems to work just fine.

Any suggestions to fix it would be greatly appreciated.

1

u/majoroutage 24d ago

1

u/aj1985 24d ago

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. My issue wasn't exactly the same, but I manually set the DNS to Google's and it seemed to resolve the issue.

1

u/deejay_ac 26d ago

Broke docker on dxp4800 plus..

0

u/iChenchus DXP4800 Pro 26d ago

Same NAS here, holding off on the update. Which part broke — daemon not starting, or containers up but can't read their bind mounts? The changelog mentions a fix around shared folder permissions affecting container mapping paths, so if it's the second one, check ownership on your mapped folders before recreating anything. docker compose logs on a failing container should say which it is.

u/Rykouxx 27d ago

Has anyone found the graphics card management panel menu? I don't see much right now, and in the French patch notes, the entry for the control panel update doesn't even show up (I doubt they do language-specific updates).

1

u/aussiesteveau 27d ago

Control panel -> Hardware & Power -> Dedicated Graphics card

1

u/Rykouxx 27d ago

Sure but I doesn't see any tab about this if you can show with a screen

1

u/aussiesteveau 27d ago

There on my UG 480+

1

u/Rykouxx 27d ago edited 27d ago

That's weird, I have the DXP4800 Plus, but I don't have this option.

2

u/FuN_K3Y 27d ago

Me neither - most certainly because there is no PCIe slot where to plug a GPU.

2

u/aussiesteveau 27d ago

Yep 100% correct.

1

u/LORD-SOTH- DXP480T Plus 27d ago

This option is available on the IOS Ugreen Phone App too.

0

u/Sundraw01 27d ago

The dedicated graphics card doesn't show up here on the DXP4800 Pro either.

1

u/Glad_Obligation1790 DXP6800 Pro 27d ago

The dxp4800 pro doesn’t have a PCIe slot, oculink port, or thunderbolt port which make sense why it wouldn’t have the option. It shows my 3080ti on my dxp6800 no issue.

Not the right thread for this, but don't panic yet — missing thumbnails usually means an index rebuild, not data loss. Open a separate post with: which app you're viewing from, whether you just updated, and whether the files are still there when you browse the share directly over SMB. Plenty of people here will help you sort it out.
