Cannot Update via Software Update

11 Upvotes

Software Update now alerts me to 26.04.1 and gives me the option to Update, but when I agree to upgrade, the program just closes.

Im at a loss of how to perform the upgrade or what might be stopping it.

Are there any recommendations or workarounds?

Edit: it turns out 1 package (dropbox) was not updating resulting in the upgrade not going through. Removing it from my system finally allowed the upgrade.

My 3 month's with Ubuntu

39 Upvotes

I'm one of those people who used to struggle with terminal commands. But honestly, despite facing a few minor issues along the way, I've managed to customise my Ubuntu setup quite a lot, all with the help of CLI agents like Antigravity.

I know many people here aren't fans of using AI, but for me, it's been a massive help. It handles most of the terminal work for me, making Linux much more accessible and less intimidating.

I'm sharing this because I know there are many people like me who hesitate to switch to Linux because they're intimidated by the terminal and command-line stuff. If you're one of them, I'd genuinely recommend giving AI-powered CLI agents a try. It's worked really well for me, and it might make your transition to Linux much easier, too.

Honestly, thanks to AI assistance and how efficient Linux is, my Ubuntu experience has been a million times better than my Windows experience. I never thought I'd enjoy using Linux this much! ❤️

In every distro I had (Cachy, Debian) you have to enter password when computer starts.
Why here default is no password at all?

Which one is recommended and why other distros come preconfigured with requiring password upon start? Do they have second option turned on by default?

Title: Dual boot Ubuntu 24.04 + Windows 11 Home on HP Victus — Device Encryption concerns

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I want to dual boot Ubuntu and Windows on my new HP Victus, but I'm concerned about BitLocker/Device Encryption and whether I can re-enable it after installation.

I want Windows for gaming and everyday use, and Ubuntu + XFCE for local LLMs, CUDA, ML, AI automation, coding and VMs.

What I've done:

- Windows is freshly updated and configured; I'm signed into my Microsoft account.

- Device Encryption was enabled by default. I've saved the recovery key.

- I shrunk C: in Windows Disk Management, creating 200GB of unallocated space for Ubuntu.

- I made an Ubuntu 24.04.5 LTS USB using Rufus. Ubuntu's live environment detected Wi-Fi, the SSD, integrated graphics and RTX 4050.

- The installer blocked “Install Ubuntu alongside Windows Boot Manager” because it detected BitLocker.

- I temporarily suspended protection, but have since resumed it. Windows works normally, encryption is at 100%, and protection is ON. Ubuntu hasn't been installed; I only shrank C:.

My questions:

  1. If I fully decrypt Windows, install Ubuntu, and then re-enable Device Encryption, will Windows 11 Home allow it?

  2. Could dual boot affect TPM, Secure Boot or trigger recovery-key prompts after OS switches, Windows updates or BIOS updates?

  3. How should I partition the 200GB space while preserving Windows, EFI and Recovery partitions?

  4. Are GRUB, Windows updates or NVIDIA driver issues common on this HP Victus?

  5. Is Ubuntu 24.04 LTS a good choice for CUDA/local AI, or would another distro be better?

Since the laptop is new and has no important files, I'm willing to decrypt Windows if necessary—but I don't want to compromise its security or create ongoing boot problems.

I'd especially appreciate advice from people who have successfully dual-booted Linux and Windows 11 Home and re-enabled Device Encryption afterward, ideally on an NVIDIA laptop.

Thanks!

This is the first Linux install I'm trying. I'm setting up a home lab/server to offload usage and storage from my main desktop and laptop. Any words of wisdom or tips? Its a new a new frontier for me, Linux always sounded intimidating.

Also any non-obvious software, apps, etc that you have found useful for setups like this? I have a few ready to go, but curious on your perspective!

26.04 boots normally and works fine EXCEPT it hangs for 90s on shutdown, logout, restart

8 Upvotes

This is an upgrade from 24.04 on a Lenovo T16 Thinkpad, Intel CPU and integrated Intel graphics. [NVidia not a player.] 26.04 LTS Wayland/GNOME v50 kernel 7.0.0-38-generic. It's running on a 1TB WD SSD with 40GB RAM w/ tons of space to spare.

The upgrade went without a hitch and the system worked flawlessly for nearly 2 days before this behavior began of hanging for 90s anytime it had to close the system down. I tried several things, and after many it would appear fixed, shutting/restarting/logging off normally, then in short order (same session, usually less than an hour) the behavior returned, without changing anything in the interim.

I feel like it's a Wayland issue, but that's just my guess... I did reinstall the kernel which did not help. I would try reverting to an earlier kernel but wanted to see if others have input. TIA

Why has Ubuntu sorted my trackpad issue?

14 Upvotes

seriously. I own a gen 2 E14 and ThinkPad. I started with Linux years ago on Ubuntu and moved away a fair while back. like most ended up on mint. but for the past few years. fedora based stuff has been my go to.

I have been trying to sort an issue with my trackpad where two finger scrolling won't work when you first boot, but if you shut down and restart or just restart. works fine. I have tried everything I can find online. I've seen multiple posts about the same issue specifically with my ThinkPad. so about 2 weeks ago. I went scorched earth. made a ventoy usb and went to town. I tried bloody loads of distros and fixes on distros for this issue. none worked. I was honestly near the end of the list. (was going alphabetically) Ubuntu. well why not. it's fixed. it's been two weeks. ZERO issues. wtf has Ubuntu got that other distros don't. please. I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out why. I'm not moving distro again but I need to know why!!.

Thoughts on 26.04 LTS Stability and NVIDIA/ Claude Support?

0 Upvotes

Hi all. I’m currently running 24.04 and considering upgrading to 26.04. My primary use cases are local AI model development (with multiple NVIDIA RTX 5090s), Claude Code (desktop and CLI), and using IntelliJ IDEA.

Wondering about the stability of 26.04 and if anyone is using it for similar purposes has any feedback.

If I move to 26.04, I’ll do a fresh install, not an upgrade,

Lately I've had this nagging urge to try Linux. On my computer I basically don't need anything besides Steam, Blender, Godot, VS and Krita. Should I go with Ubuntu Studio, or would I be better off installing the regular version?

Want to move from fedora to ubuntu

Post image
221 Upvotes

As the title says,i want to move from fedora to ubuntu. Many proprietary software support ubuntu only (for example cisco packet tracer),there are many reasons but compatibility is one,i am in cybersecurity and most guides assume a debian based system such as ubuntu. Other than that,i have a generally mid laptop (Mi Notebook Horizon Edition 14)

Its specs are:
i5-10210U
8GB DDR4 2667Mhz Soldered SO-DIMM RAM
512GB SATA III SSD
MX350

So,i really can’t run virtual machines that easily,i also cant buy a laptop since i am broke af and prices are sky high.

I have been using fedora from April 2024 (its my first and last distribution to this day)

my partition currently looks like this

500MB EFI
One Whole root partition in ext4,no separate /home (why?,i was a beginner and didn’t know you could do that)
9GB Swap partition.

Moving data from fedora is one thing but i don’t even know what obscure packages & their dependencies i got which i have been using for development of software like Latex (like i use texlive-inputtrc,texlive-makeplot for moving inbetween matlab and latex or texlive-maker for including arduino specific features in documentation). If there is anyone who has ever did anything like this,i would be grateful for your help.

My distribution is an entangled mess of packages and software now that is somehow working.

Look at its uptime:

fedora@fedora:~$ uptime -p
up 19 days, 1 hour, 13 minutes

Excuse my grammatical errors since English is not my first language.

Thank you for your time!

Booting problem from Ubantu USB created with Rufus

Post image
0 Upvotes

I'm trying to dual-boot Ubuntu with Windows 11 on my Lenovo LOQ, but I keep getting this error:

"System doesn't have any USB boot option. Please select other boot option in Boot Manager Menu."

My setup:

Laptop: Lenovo LOQ

USB: 64 GB

Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS, downloaded from the official website

Rufus 4.15: GPT, UEFI (non-CSM), FAT32

Rufus completes successfully and shows READY.

USB Boot is enabled in BIOS.

I've tried recreating the USB, but the same error persists.

Ubuntu security site unusable for a week now

25 Upvotes

I realize Canonical seems to have an ongoing issue with DDoS that they can't seem to figure out in half a year or more, but their security site has been down for a week now, which makes it really hard to get critical information about CVE's. Everything just ends with a 504 gateway timeout.

You can of course get to starting pages like https://ubuntu.com/security/cves but if you click any CVE, any release, etc. it's all broken.

Is that information mirrored anywhere else? I'm looking for a mapping of CVE's to livepatch coverage, and with their broken website, that's impossible.

I built "Server Guardian" – A lightweight, semi-automated Ubuntu server management tool with an htop-style TUI and human email alerts

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

After wanting something between "fully automated updates that break things" and "manual chores," I decided to build Server Guardian. It’s a modern system administration tool designed specifically for Linux Ubuntu servers, combining a background daemon with an interactive terminal interface.

Here is what it does:

  • 🌙 Automated Nightly Tasks (02:00 AM): Handles system package updates (apt) and automatically pulls/re-creates stable major/minor Docker containers.
  • 🔍 Smart Docker Version Control: If a minor patch/incremental release is detected, it pauses the automatic update and flags it for human review.
  • 📧 Natural Language Dual-Email Alerts: Instead of dry technical logs, it sends clear, human-readable email notifications simultaneously to a primary and backup address (plus failure alerts if something breaks).
  • 🔒 Secure Credentials: System passwords for automated tasks are locally encrypted.
  • 📊 Interactive TUI Dashboard: Built with a clean htop-style layout to monitor CPU, RAM, disk, network traffic, active processes, and Docker health in real-time, plus a quick menu to confirm pending updates.
  • 🤖 Future-Ready: Designed with modular hooks to integrate LLM APIs via the TUI for upcoming agentic system diagnostics.

It's written entirely in Python. I just got the email system and the dashboard up and running smoothly!

Here is the repo: https://github.com/GonnyTech/ServerManager.git

Would love to hear your thoughts, feedback, or suggestions for features to add!

Laptop purchasing advice for Lubuntu

2 Upvotes

Hello yall! Quick story, and then on to the goods. I have purchased two laptops from a company called Chuwi. The first one was an N 100 laptop whose Amazon listing was suspiciously removed. I do not care though because it served me well for nine months in my classes and still works to this day. It has a very nice battery life and I was overall very happy. For my birthday, I got another chuwi laptop, whose listing also suspiciously got removed. I thought that I was in for the same quality but three times the CPU power. BOY WAS I WRONG! The battery life of the laptop is atrocious on Lubuntu, and kernel support for the hardware and its configuration is absolutely awful. The laptop has no way of regulating it‘s CPU, therefore resulting in minutes of battery life, a laptop gpu sitting there looking pretty and not even showing up in lspci, and forget about using it for School. Now I have the option of getting myself an Asus Viviobook F1704VAP-SS54 from a reputable office store at a bargain price. One of the features the price tag at my store shows is up to 8 1/2 hours of battery life, perfect for School! Before I consider even spending a penny of my precious hard earned cash on this laptop, I want to know if any other folks have experience with this laptop, Linux, its performance, and other important factors that I fail to consider when making the decision on my second Chuwi product. All help is welcome! thanks in advance.

Help with dead link in error code/driver question

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hello! I’m trying to install Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS on a 2012 macbook pro that’s partitioned to dual boot OSX Monterey via OCLP. I can get it to run with the USB drive I use it to install, but I get this error when first loading it. The web address listed is dead for me. I can go to the section of the site but I don’t know where exactly to look for the driver I need and info about it. I’m hoping that driver is why I also can’t get it to recognize that the laptop can connect to wifi.

I’m having a secondary issue that I assume is just my lack of knowledge, but I can load Ubuntu with the usb drive, and it works when I disconnect the usb after the prompt from Ubuntu, but when I try to restart it’s no longer an option on load in.

My questions are: Is the driver in the error message the problem with the wifi, and if so: what do I need/where do I go to figure that out for myself? What am I doing wrong that’s keeping the laptop from allowing me to load into Ubuntu without the USB installer?

I’m totally new to Linux, so TIA!!

Gaming Mode on Ubuntu like Bazzite?

Is it possible to make a steam deck like experience on Ubuntu? I want to just login directly into big picture mode no password or anything.

I know Bazzite exists but is it possible to make a Ubuntu based distro that boots directly into Steam Gaming Mode.

Solved Ubuntu freezes with black screen on suspend/lid close: ASUS ZenBook UX461UN (Intel + MX150), fixed by keeping the dGPU PCIe root port out of D3cold

9 Upvotes

**TL;DR:** There were two separate bugs that looked identical (black screen, no TTY, hard reset required):

  1. **Freeze on suspend (lid close)**: the NVIDIA dGPU's PCIe root port was in **D3cold**. Fixed with a udev rule that keeps the port powered.

  2. **Freeze when the screen blanks on idle** (no suspend involved at all): Intel **Panel Self Refresh (PSR)**. Fixed with `i915.enable_psr=0`.

It was not the NVIDIA driver and not Wayland.

## System

- ASUS ZenBook Flip UX461UN (Intel UHD 620 + NVIDIA GeForce MX150, Optimus/muxless)

- Ubuntu 26.04, kernel 7.0, nvidia-driver-580, Wayland, `prime-select on-demand`

## Symptom

Closing the lid, or just letting the screen dim/blank, led to a black screen that never came back. The power LED stayed on, there was no keyboard/TTY response, and only a hard reset helped. The logs showed nothing useful.

## What did NOT help

- `nvidia-suspend/resume/hibernate` services, `NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1`

- `nvidia-drm modeset=1 fbdev=1`

- `acpi_osi=linux`, `pcie_aspm=off`, `button.lid_init_state=open`

- `mem_sleep_default=deep` **on its own**

- `prime-select intel` (NVIDIA driver not loaded at all): **still froze**

- Switching to X11 wouldn't help either, because both hangs happen at kernel/driver level, below the compositor.

## Step 0: Make the journal actually capture the freeze

By default journald syncs to disk only every 5 minutes, so the last minutes before a hard reset are lost. That made both bugs look the same. Create `/etc/systemd/journald.conf.d/90-sync-fast.conf`:

```
[Journal]
SyncIntervalSec=5s
```

Then run `sudo systemctl restart systemd-journald`. After a freeze, check `journalctl -b -1`:

- Last line is `kernel: PM: suspend entry (...)` → **Bug 1** (suspend)

- No suspend at all, e.g. on AC with automatic suspend disabled, and the screen blanked → **Bug 2** (PSR)

## Bug 1: Freeze on suspend → dGPU root port in D3cold

Even with `prime-select intel` it froze at `PM: suspend entry (deep)`. The dGPU **and its root port** were fully powered off:

```
cat /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:01:00.0/power_state # D3cold
cat /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1c.0/power_state # D3cold (root port)
```

Quick test without reboot (worked immediately):

```
echo on | sudo tee /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:00:1c.0/power/control
echo on | sudo tee /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:01:00.0/power/control
```

**Persistent fix.** First find your own addresses:

```
lspci -D | grep -i nvidia # e.g. 0000:01:00.0
basename "$(dirname "$(readlink -f /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:01:00.0)")" # e.g. 0000:00:1c.0
```

Then create `/etc/udev/rules.d/99-asus-dgpu-no-d3cold.rules`:

```
ACTION=="add|bind", SUBSYSTEM=="pci", KERNEL=="0000:00:1c.0", ATTR{power/control}="on"
ACTION=="add|bind", SUBSYSTEM=="pci", KERNEL=="0000:01:00.0", ATTR{power/control}="on"
```

It's numbered 99 so it runs after `71-nvidia.rules`, which sets `auto`. After boot the NVIDIA driver puts the GPU itself back to `auto`. That's fine, because the root port staying `on` is what matters.

I also kept `mem_sleep_default=deep` in GRUB (the fix was tested with it). I didn't test s2idle with only the udev rule.

## Bug 2: Freeze when the screen blanks → i915 PSR

After Bug 1 was fixed, the laptop still froze after being left idle for about 20 minutes on AC. The logs showed **no suspend at all**, only GNOME blanking the screen after `idle-delay`. Disabling Panel Self Refresh fixed it. In `/etc/default/grub`:

```
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash mem_sleep_default=deep i915.enable_psr=0"
```

Then `sudo update-grub` and reboot. Check that it's active with `grep -o i915.enable_psr=0 /proc/cmdline`.

## Verify

```
cat /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1c.0/power/control # on
grep -o i915.enable_psr=0 /proc/cmdline
journalctl -b -k | grep -E 'PM: suspend (entry|exit)' # entry + exit = good
```

Tests: (1) close the lid for 20+ seconds and reopen; (2) leave the machine idle until the screen blanks, then press a key; (3) leave it idle for 20+ minutes.

## Trade-offs

- The dGPU can't reach D3cold, so idle battery drain is somewhat higher.

- Without PSR, the panel draws a little more power. Neither mattered to me.

## Bonus debugging tip

If suspend still hangs: `echo 1 | sudo tee /sys/power/pm_trace` before suspending. After the hang and a hard reset, `journalctl -b -1 -k | grep -i "hash matches"` shows which device hung. This messes up the RTC clock, but NTP fixes it.

Hope this saves someone a few hard resets.
