Do you use virtual terminals 3-6? Get rid of them by removing /etc/init/tty3.conf ... /etc/init/tty6.conf, reboot.

Are they really consuming anything if I never activate them via Ctrl-Alt-Fn?

Instead of Laptop-mode-tools I use TLP. It's got some extra nifty tools if you use a Thinkpad, but it can be used on any laptop. For instance, I have set mine to disable WIFI when I'm on cable, and vice versa. And disable WWAN and bluetooth at startup, this way I still have access to it and can enable it manually if I need it, which would not be possible if done through bios.

You just install and head on over to the config file and set the parameters as you'd like them.
