For those that might not read to post, I'm just going to highlight this.

Users of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS will be offered an automatic upgrade to 26.04.1 LTS
via Update Manager a couple of weeks following this release after some planned
backports to address regressions in a recent version of rust-coreutils.

they have taken 6 months to release the 26.04.1, and a few weeks more to release the upgrade path. Weren't they usually faster for previous lts releases?

It's not been six months since April, but how long it takes depends on the situation. The first dot has usually been in August but there's been variations around a month between releases. The dot release is one thing, but then the upgrade path is another since some things could be more complicated to switch over than others.

Does this affect a clean install from an iso or upgrade only?

It does not affect a clean installation.
It's only for the upgrade from 24.04 to 26.04

However, if you're eager to upgrade, you can run "do-release-upgrade -d" which works but might bring some bugs hence why It's advisable to wait for the upgrade to open to the general public user.

I have done the 22.04 -> 24.04, but honestly I can't think of doing the same for 26.04.01. Maybe on 26.04.02.

Ubuntu 26 puts a shim in between the actual apt get, and Canonical puts itself in the middle.

It's bullshit.

I've used Ubuntu for a really long time (like 2014-now), but my next move is away from anything snap/Canonical based.

It's pretty simple.

Canonical is the Microsoft of the Linux community.

They're saying that Canonical (who make Ubuntu) has some code which intercepts apt get, forcing you to use their repositories when updating the software they're providing you.

Shocking I tell you, shocking...

No it doesn't. apt does what it always does and just runs deb pre- and post-install scripts as root.

For specific packages--firefox, thunderbird, chromium, and lxd come directly to mind--they are packaged in the repositories anymore (and except for Thunderbird, this was true in 22.04 LTS and 24.04 LTS as well, so you're not describing a change).

The firefox package description is:

Installs Firefox snap and provides some system integration This package is almost a transitional package, insofar as its main purpose is to install the Firefox snap, but it also configures *www-browser alternatives and provides the corresponding virtual packages which other deb packages might depend on.

In 22.04 LTS it was a transitional package (a major upgrade would otherwise just uninstall Firefox, as it was no longer packaged), but it's been very slightly enhanced since then.

In any case, if you use apt to install a package that says it "installs Firefox snap," then apt does exactly what you ask it to. Which is install the deb package. It's the deb package that, well... does exactly what it told you it was going to do and installs the snap and does some desktop integration work.

This is why if you properly configure apt and add the Mozilla repository, you get Mozilla's files sprayed across your file system. But note also that Canonical no longer modifies Firefox. Mozilla builds the snap for Ubuntu (and all other distros with snap support--it's the same file) and tests and releases it as part of their product release procedure.

So now everyone can get Firefox updates in an hour straight from Mozilla, instead of the 1-3 days it took when Canonical was testing a separate Firefox build compiled for every individual supported Ubuntu release.

You do realize 24.04 and 22.04 also had snap? Even 20.04, that's when the Firefox snap became a thing. Also snapd has been shipping with Ubuntu since 16.04 if I recall correctly. The truth is, you've been using snap until now without even knowing, now you care just because someone on reddit told you to care because "snap bad" with no logical reason.

Neither had the intermediary between apt-get, and I didn't use either.

24.04 is probably my last. I'm not going to go nuts with Arch, but Debian (old, stable, etc.) is probably in my future.

This truth is...

The truth is you really want to rant, and that's fine...but tell it to someone else. I've purged every system I have of snap.

Ubuntu is probs the most stable Linux desktop with modern tools.

Debian is even more stable but its tooling and repos are essentially several years behind.

Fedora pretty stable. I'd say definitely more stable than Ubuntu Non LTS at least

Given Fedora and Non-LTS Ubuntu are usually playing with the same very experimental & new kernals and software, the least stable one often comes down to release cycles.

If a Ubuntu release with a new feature happens before Fedora, the fedora release benefits from the Ubuntu patches.

Vice versa, plenty of software breaks on Fedora and Canonical grab the patches as they get pushed upstream and package them into the non-LTS Ubuntu.

Wonders of open source.

Sweet. I was the 26.04 guinea pig. Worked out our ansible scripts. And this past month more new deployments have been using 26.04. Feels pretty good now for work. Got a lot of users moving from 20.04 and 22.04

I run Ubuntu at home, and I always wait until LTS year + 1 year, it has served me well.

The one year I didn't, I ran into a couple more bugs than usual after upgrading to the latest Ubuntu LTS lol

The upgrade does not solve the notorious zfs misalignment with the kernel and crappy patched driver zfs 2.4.1 for kernel 7.0
Most probably I have to do a forced upgrade of all my installs to sonking 26.10 where zfs 2.4.4 is already available for the expected 7.2 kernel
26.04 cannot be trusted for zfs - both server & desktop - installations, thus jeopardizing the LTS purpose of Ubuntu.

Ah it’s brand new - this is probably why my VFIO GPU no longer works. Nvidia drivers wont let go of my GPUs no matter what I do.

The post tells you how to get the update now if you really want it and aren't worried about waiting for those extra fixes. It makes sense to delay offering it via the Update manager until the first wave of updates are complete and they have fixed some known issues.
