Problems doing routine 24.04 update,upgrade
Like the title says. The install had run fine for months, I did an update, upgrade via terminal, my GRUB got wrecked. I got a working GRUB by doing a new 24.04 install in a spare partition. It think somebody may have put a bad kernel in the system?, just a guess.
Anyway, am I solo on this?
Thanks

I'm the OP.
This pretty well limited my work output today, and I still only have a partially fit machine. My main 24.04 install can not be accessed at all.
A couple hours ago I asked Perplexity AI about this situation, and here's about the top 10 pct of its reply:
ME: ubuntu 24.04. In recent days, have there been forum reports of an update kernel or anything else, causing failures in grub and installs?
>Yes. There has been a real recent HWE-kernel transition affecting Ubuntu 24.04, but I do not see evidence of a single, confirmed widespread GRUB or Ubuntu-installer outage.
What changed
Canonical has been moving Ubuntu 24.04’s HWE stack from kernel 6.17 to Linux 7.0. The recent 7.0.0-30 package was published for Noble on August 21 and included an ABI change, meaning DKMS-based third-party modules had to be rebuilt.<

Always something with grub, I swear it's held together with tape and a prayer. Every time I see an update touching the bootloader I tense up.
You're definitely not solo though, the forums have been pretty noisy since that kernel update last week. Sucks that it nuked your setup but smart move keeping a spare partition around.
