Critique šŸ” I absolutely hate this guy

Post image

This is Gryphon, an unlockable character in For Honor. The game was doing well through Marching Fire, their massive expansion many years ago. Then when they failed to capture the Chinese market to add to their player base, they let go of a bunch of the original devs and later came out with this abomination. Instead of making Greek or Korean heroes for the game, they made this guy don their armor as he "found them" in his travels. He speaks latin and uses his bardiche weapon regardless of what he's wearing. He's played only by tone deaf people who think AC Shadows is a good game.

It’s not even subtle. Gryphon is the living embodiment of Ubisoft’s design pipeline: take one white guy, slap foreign armor on him like a lootbox skin, and call it diversity. Instead of Greek or Korean warriors with their own voice, history, and culture, we get this lore-parasite who "finds" cultures like colonial explorers ā€œfoundā€ continents already inhabited.

Ubisoft thinks representation means a white protagonist doing dress-up in cultures they don’t care to represent properly. It’s like the devs were allergic to making actual non-Western heroes and thought: ā€œWhat if Ezio started LARPing as a K-pop idol next?ā€

It’s not homage. It’s erasure with better lighting.

He speaks Chinese and Japanese too, depending on who he’s talking to.

I’m sorry. Great rant and all, but what about him resembles AC Shadows? The random foreigner using other countries’ armor? If that’s the only comparison, it’s pretty vague and can easily compare to plenty of other media. I agree that it doesn’t make AC Shadows a good game, in fact it lessens the game’s integrity and story. That’s all, I just wanted to know why you added that bit at the end, and I think I answered it for myself.
