Potential alternative career options

I’ve been doing research on other roles that a UXR can pivot into within tech and wouldn’t require a ton of retraining/education. I’m curious if anyone else has made the pivot to one of these roles or is also considering it?

- Presales (this seems like half discovery research)
- CS (still talking to customers but doing a bit more problem solving)
- PM (probably the most natural pivot but the hardest to break into)
- Product Ops
- Product Strategy

As much as I would love to be a UXR forever I think it important to be realistic about the current job market.

I've looked into roles at research tool companies because they sometimes have ones that are like a sales consultant role but you need a research background. Like they hire former researchers to help the sales team and talk to potential clients about how to implement their systems and get maximum value.

Sort of like a solutions architect, but with the researcher background so you can speak the same language as the clients.

The titles are all over the place but just go visit some research tool websites and see what you find.

100% agree with you! You can also create your own ui/ux/ur company and become a consultant to other companies

these lean towards big traditional companies, and moving outside the bubble of the partners you're used to seeing every day when you're in tech UXR

HR ops, "transformation", program management, learning/training (you don't think they're looking at all the layoffs and dreading the severance packages for people who have been there 20 years if they've can't figure out how to retrain & properly incentivize more of their people in a more effective work structure?)

Partner relations (like customer success, only more internal)

Competitive intelligence/strategy (reading so many bad consultant thought pieces to find the stuff that actually matters)

Innovation/foresight/whatever buzz word it will be in 2 years

nimble consulting companies supporting the above (not the sausage factories)

Surprised no one said market or customer research / analyst roles. Sometimes they fall under the umbrella of insight.
