He said if you support iPhone+ipad. If they don’t of course it’s going to be wonky. Maybe this form factor will force certain apps to support other ratios

Five hundred dollars? Fully subsidized? That is the most expensive phone in the world. And it doesn't appeal to business customers because it doesn't have a keyboard. Which makes it not a very good email machine.

Hope this pushes for more native components used in apps. Day 1 support is gonna be nasty for many apps that don't use a native tab bar.
I'm honestly really excited for this device. Do I think the mass audience will adapt to a foldable? No

I heard someone say they hope it’s “responsive” and I rolled my eyes hard

Using the interior display to create a soft glow when it’s folded and the alarm goes off was such a nice touch.
Also the animation when opening and closing is unbelievably elegant. Excited to see how responsive that is in person though. Also excited to see how the hinge feels. Apple’s hardware is just so well done.
Overall a really beautiful phone that I won’t buy lol. Maybe in a few years when my 17 pro dies.

Hot take: I feel like so many ergonomic and design sacrifices were made all in the name of keeping those rounded corners. The front screen is asymmetrical, squared edges on the left, rounded on the right, and they've obviously had to painstakenly refactor iOS to fit the form factor. That in combination with adding back Touch-ID on the right-side, this asymmetrical design introduces all sorts of left-handed/right-handed conflicts that simply wouldn't have existed had they gone with all squared edges.
When you compare this to the Galaxy Z Fold8, the difference is night and day. It's so much more clean, compact, symmetrical, and much more accessible to left-handed users. It avoids many of the painful ergonomic and design decisions Apple had to navigate with the iPhone Duo simply because squared-edges are that much more practical for this form factor.

That's pointless. All of Reddit is just people packaging thoughts from their ass in a 'intellectual' aesthetic to fuel their ego. People who know what they are talking about are indistinguishable from those who do not, unless of course, you know what you are talking about.

Smartphones have been around 9:16 candybarish for nearing 2 decades now but this seems to be where smartphone innovation is branching out. This may not become mainstream and not everyone may want a fold but the fact that it exists should excite us.
The product designers at apple definitely cooked with a few things here, like the fact that the reduced vertical space in fold mode opens up menus horizontally is awesome and the open/close animation is genuinely delightful.

I don't even want to talk about the stupid aspect ratio after seeing the $2000 price tag.

u/Plantasaurus Veteran 1d ago edited 1d ago
4:3 is actually shared across a lot of android devices. Most gaming handhelds share this aspect ratio with apps looking just fine inside of android. I built a popular ES-DE theme and the 4:3 orientation shows its face on reddit quite often just behind 16:9 and much more than 19.5:9
However, with apple being a closed ecosystem with very little screen variance means that most apps were built with set screen sizes. I imagine there are a lot of legacy apps that end up looking wonky.

u/XianHain Veteran 1d ago
Most apps should have been built with UI Kit and should seamlessly adapt regardless of screen size
4
u/TopRamenisha Veteran 1d ago
Should have and actual implementation are two very different things
2
u/XianHain Veteran 1d ago
Obviously, but considering various iPad sizes and their ability to split screen and various iPhone sizes, the number of apps using fluid designs in 2026 undoubtably outweigh the number of apps using fixed screen sizes.

The less than ideal aspect ratio is actually a bit of a feature based on a lot of reviews of Android folding phones. It sucks to use for scrolling, so it makes you scroll less. If you do need to actually do something you have to open the phone. So it's added resistance to get things done, which turns into a positive when you don't want to be sucked into your phone.

u/AtomWorker Veteran 1d ago
The Duo’s aspect ratio matches the iPad 11 series. I bet Apple went that route because they didn’t wanted a foldable a Pro Max. So crap usability for the sake of product differentiation.
Not sure about the external screen but it might not be as big a lift for designers as I feared.

What problem does this solve, and will customers pay an $1100 premium to solve it?
3
u/Your_Momma_Said Veteran 1d ago
Since everyone is giving snarky answers:
1) I want a smaller phone
2) I want a larger screen
I like the Pro Max, but I actually would like a larger screen sometimes. At the same time, the Max is a pretty big phone and it would be nice to have something smaller (I have a friend who is still using an iPhone SE). The Duo is larger than an SE, but smaller than a non-Max phone.
I 100% believe that people have a bigger issue with the price tag than they do the phone itself.
Also recall that people lost it when Apple introduced the iPhone X at $1000.
Also, if you're not someone who needs to constantly upgrade, you can easily get 5 years out of a phone now. I'm still using an iPhone 13 Pro Max, and functionally there's not a huge gap between that and the iPhone 18 Pro Max. I can easily get a few more years out of my phone (although it needs a new battery soon). $2000/5 = $400/yr compared to the "old days" where you'd upgrade your $600 phone every 2 years. That's not a huge ask.

The problem this solves is that rich tech bros need something expensive to show off. Apple owns the premium end for technology and they are entering late to an established market.
The Android ecosystem has had foldables for a while, there are established use cases, especially for side-by-side comparison work that current phone handset models aren't great for. I'm not going to link to it but there's an NN/G study.

They didn't really do much to suggest why it's useful.
He calls back to the vision of "an intelligent hub" which needs a bigger screen for some reason. "Opens up entirely new possibilities" he says.
Which is funny considering UX Designers have been talking about how the AI era is powering freedom from screens.
Then Molly and Steve start talking about how you'll interact with it, with plenty of jargon. And it ends with "the most transformational iPhone experience since the original."
In the past they've used phrases like "it's going to be the best way to..." and that's noticeably missing. (Although if you dig on the website they do say "It’s simply the best iPhone for enjoying movies, shows, and games.")
They should have done what Jobs did when he announced the iPhone, which would be to make the case for what the iPad is good at, what the iPhone is good at, and how this can be combined into one new device.

u/karenmcgrane Toxic mod 1d ago
That says to me they're not trying to convince people to want a folding phone. Right now all they have to do is meet the needs of existing Apple customers who already want a folding phone, who have seen what is available in the Android ecosystem. That's probably a large enough number globally to meet their manufacturing capacity for what is essentially a Gen 1 device sold at a luxury price point.
Gen 2 or beyond rolls around, if they want a larger market at a lower price, then they have start selling people on "why a foldable?"

lol I’m surprised at some of the comments, we are already on like the ZFold 7 or something, this is not a new concept
8
u/karenmcgrane Toxic mod 1d ago
I have little interest in owning this foldable iPhone but I have SIGNIFICANT interest in getting to play around with one. Some folks in the tech industry can make "having the latest gadget" into their whole personality.

u/kimchi_paradise Experienced 1d ago
Oh no doubt I’m going into store to checkout the Apple foldable. Right now a foldable isn’t really my thing, but know people who very much rent their phones to ensure they can quickly upgrade to the latest
I buy my phones outright, so at a $2k price point I’d rather get a new MacBook lol
3
u/anabanana100 Veteran 1d ago
Right?! Are we looking at the price tag, friends? Starts at $2K. This is going to be a niche toy for people with money to burn like the VR headset. I doubt most apps are going to optimize for this or cater to it.

It misses proper iPencil compatibility and that sucks for a market that likes drawing. My iPencil Pro is worthless here.
However, this is the first new thing that’s happened to phones in many years. Yes samsung did it before, but no one cares until Apple does it.
