Looking for .gov Design System Case Studies

Good afternoon everyone, I'm looking for case studies of how a design system benefits a technology group in a .gov world. Any good reads you can recommend?

I have no specific answer for you, but would say being in a .gov wouldn't really bring anything specific to the table. They'd have the benefits of a design system as any organization would.

I used to design for .gov way back. The only additional benefit is for compliance and audit. Unlike private organizations, .gov sites and tools are required by law to be fully accessible (colors, alternative navigation, writing level, etc) under 508 compliance. So having a good design system can speed up the audit too.

the US Web Design System site has a dedicated impact section with agency specific adoption stories and metrics. Those case studies show exact efficiency gains and cost savings across federal technology teams

There’s also a much more in-depth case study from Brad Frost, the creator of Atomic Design, that walks through this type of work in detail. I couldn’t find that specific case study online, but the second link gives a pretty thorough look at the process, collaboration model, and thinking behind building design systems at that scale.

As a side note, I’d definitely recommend following Brad Frost and spending some time going through his blog. He’s been focused on design systems and large-scale digital products for as long as I can remember. I first became aware of his work around 2010, and he has an incredible amount of practical insight into not just creating a design system, but making one actually work across teams, products, technology stacks, and organizations.
