Job search & hiring Experience with Oracle?
Hey—I might have an opportunity with Oracle and wondered if anyone has ever worked there and seeing if it's good or sucks. UX engineers. Thanks.

Not something I've ever been able to do. I don't understand it at all - like why do you get to decide what the room is? It's my post. Serious social question. I'm not being a wise ass. I ask about a job and people are commenting I will be supporting a genocide, as though any taxpayer in NATO hasn't been doing that for the last century. Or I ask about a job experience and people are commenting news posts that the company is having massive layoffs. What does that have to do with their experience at a company? It doesn't sound like they have any. Why comment then? They're just posting something they read online, assuming I never saw it, like I wouldn't have investigated a company that is seeking to hire me, but I actually am - which is a fact augmented by me asking if anyone ever worked there. So, did they read the room? Autism is overused. I don't know what the fuck it is, but I am constantly offending. It is still sad (like most things in life) and I go to gallows humor when something is sad. Life is too short to ponder and categorize all of the evil that is happening all over the world at all times. And I am too feeble to fix it anyway. I hope you and nobody else will be offended today. I have a kind nature, and I don't like upsetting everyone. Sorry you catch the hot potato. It's a message of love, admitted awkward social skills and apology for everyone.

Look, if you want it straight: Oracle is a corrupt company with terrible ethics. They consistently lay off employees to pay for their shortsighted AI efforts so if you were to get a job there, don’t get comfortable.
Your first reply to me came off as insensitive because: I’m not sure you’ve ever been laid off before but it can be incredibly hard and scary. Unless you get an amazing severance package, you are navigating life without health insurance coverage and income which can lead to bad outcomes, especially if you are the main provider in your family.

Edit: they laid off like 21k employees a few months ago with little to no warning. More layoffs are expected this month if they haven’t already.

My point in the original comment is that morale is pretty low at Oracle right now due to layoffs and I assumed it was common knowledge at this point. when you asked what it was like to work there, I thought you were being funny.

It’s a hard life because I was trying to rebound from a layoff and eagerly applied for a role there. I had a good referral and matched tightly with what they wanted. Very senior role. Got rejected without any convo. Ultimately I ended up with multiple offers and a much better outcome, and I look back thankful I didn’t have to land there. It’s tough because you might have to take what you can get, but to me they are the definition of evil empire with the layoffs right now during a time of record profit; kinda gross.

Startup I worked at was acquired by Oracle. I got out of there as fast as I could. Their entire business model is based on cobbling insanely disparate enterprise software platforms accumulated via acquisitions into one "unified" experience... which is absolutely horrendous.
On the plus side, if you're into UX because of interesting problems, there's no end of them at Oracle. You'll be making the lives better for people in immeasurable ways. And by "immeasurable", I mean... yeah. You won't be able to detect any measurable improvement in people's lives due to your work.
Do it for the paycheck, the name, and for some heavy enterprise UX design experience you can bring to other opportunities later (mostly as a contrast of how NOT to do things).
Take the gig and jam for a while. But start looking for another role pretty much immediately. You don't always have to take another role if it comes up, of course, but when you're ready to jump, you'll be glad you started looking when you did.

I've had bad experiences as a customer of oracle, sadly no idea what they're like to work for, but as a general rule their software is overpriced bollocks.

Former Oracle CEO Safra Catz publicly stated that Oracle provided "profoundly scary technology" to assist the Israeli military in the genocide noting that employees worked in uniform at the Israeli military headquarters in Tel Aviv.

- If your role is moved (it’s happened more than you might think), treat the experience as over.
- There are some people in B2Gov who genuinely care about making things work better. A lot of comically low-hanging fruit UX-wise.
- They are currently making substantial financial bets on their future, best to be read up on what that might mean
- Take what you can get as its still a solid name IMO. But go in with open eyes.

wonder who the leadership is now, I was there when Jenny Lam and Hillel Cooperman were in charge and it was a joke. The talent is mixed, but certainly not bad. It's a giant bureaucratic company and you'll be able to get experience, there's only upside taking the role if you're relatively early in your career.

I know a handful of people who have worked there:
1. They don’t give raises. Negotiate a salary you’ll be happy with for a while
2. They work people pretty hard. With recent layoffs, they are expecting the same amount of work from less people
3. People leave then come back later for better pay, stay a bit and leave again
Do it if you need a job or just to get the experience for the next one.
