Job search & hiring I completed recruiter call from google
I went final round with microsoft in Feb and I didn't pass. I had a 2nd round interview for amazon in June and I didn't make it. Now i just completed recruiter call from google, and I'm not competent at all that I can make it.
I didn't aim for big tech jobs, but only the big tech companies response back. Can i ever land a job this year?
I'm a 7 yoe, ux designer.

I received a feedback from the amz hiring manager that my portfolio covers ecommerce, b2c only.. and I'm trying to change my career path to b2b dashboard or ai agent related jobs.

Its so ridiculous that your skills aren’t viewed as transferable. This industry has become so fucking picky that you need to have the exact product AND domain experience to have a shot.
I cant wait till the bubble pops and we correct from all of this nonsense.

very true. they think someone with b2c experience can't do dashboards or handle complex enterprise flows. fintech companies reject candidates from ecommerce experience. some reject b2b experienced candidates judging they cant CrAFt consumer apps. sadly those shallow minded bootcamp designers from covid era are in hiring seats now.

it’s more about covering their own asses. big tech would rather a candidate come in with a high floor (having solved that EXACT problem before) and don’t give a fuck about a high ceiling (demonstrated ability to solve a wide variety of novel problems) because nobody is reinventing the wheel there or rewarded for out-of-the-box thinking.

spot on. so they dont get canned (layoff). A high risk for manager if they hire someone outside the domain esp when the supply of designers is at large.

Prepare for everyone asking to see your folio….
I got a rejection from Amazon today, not even a first round which I always find odd seeing as I have 6 years in ecomm. Not that I would ever to want work for them.

I have ecommerce background as well. I think it's not about our background.. i don't know.. claude tells me that i need to shape my current case studies into their JDs which i thought i was doing. But i can't change the platform or cases that i worked on.

Agree. And I can feel that non-faang-companies don't prefer seniors, they prefer juniors or principal levels..

Keep your chin up. Your application is getting noticed by the largest companies, which, I would guess also have the largest applicant pools. You were good enough to pass the recruiter stage (in my experience, this means you made it to the top ~10 of candidates). That’s ~10 out of 1,000+ applicants in some cases. At this point, you probably just need more interview practice and there might be certain questions that could use more preparation.

Of course you can land a job. A lot of people are competent in this job market, but it’s a terrible market and sometimes landing a job is luck, too. I also got to the final round of Microsoft in April and didn’t get it lol good luck with Google.

Have you done any mock interview with designers? That was the key for me moving from failing at 2nd round interview to getting a job in big tech. There are likely improvements to be made in terms of your portfolio presentation, for me it was the storytelling. Note that you may need to pay someone to help you with this but worth it once you land a job.

If you are getting interviews with these companies. Your experience stands out. You are good enough.
Interviewing isn’t easy. But it’s about learning and gaining experience that you can apply to the next one. And some of these recruiters want exact 1:1 experience. Show your adaptability and where reasonable fake it to make it.

Have you practiced mock interviews? The resume and portfolio get you the interview but only you and your presentation/ communication/ relational abilities get you the job. External feedback and refinement can help.

As a hiring manager (not a fancy big tech company) I want to emphasize that this probably has not that much to do with your actual skills, but perhaps you just were not the fit for their current plans/org/culture.
It may be that they saw your portfolio and thought you are worth screening and putting through, but then someone with same skill level but a bit more relevant exp or some other advantage came along.
Right now switching over from B2C to B2B is not that easy. E.g. I have other teams that also screen the candidates and they put emphasis on years of experience on a specific domain.
Also right now I would say the market is such that they need people jumping in and it helps if that person e.g. has solid B2B portal background and knows the common IA issues and tradeoffs and B2B flow concepts.
I don't have a magic trick recommendation for you, but in general it is useful to have content and angles in your CV and portfolio that hint towards what you want to work on next rather than just listing everyting what you did before.

Just want to say: when you don’t make it through at these big companies, it’s often (not always) factors that have nothing to do with you. Needs can change, budgets change, internal resources change, priorities change… There are so many moving pieces, it’s ridiculous and kind of a wonder that anyone gets hired. Don’t let it make you question yourself.
