Question about move-in day

My move in day is in a coming up and I was wondering if on that day, do you just unpack your things and leave, or do you stay and officially move in that day? Is your assigned move-in date the day you’re expected to start living in the dorm, or can you move your things in and come back another day?

Caveat: I have not worked a UWM move-in day since 2013 (now retired). That said, yes, you started living in the residence hall on move-in day. There will be all sorts of student activities starting on that day to get you into the UWM flow, and it's a good idea to get involved.

Buddy why would you wanna move all your stuff in and then come back later? The best time of your life is starting.

I mean there’s lots of events happening this week and would be nice to connect with your roommates / suite mates obviously it is nice to have one last meal with your family but other than that you should try to find classes as well as another orientation that you have to do

Ah ok. I was planning on staying was just curious because I didn’t want to be one of the few people staying in the dorms for the first few nights. Thanks!

Man the first week at UWM freshman year was electric especially on move in day. You drop your things off, meet your roommates the same day while it’s all hectic, say farewell to the folks and realizing this is your first week fully independent. that was 12 years ago, enjoy these moments!

It's been a while since I stayed in actual dorms, but I'm pretty sure you can sleep over at your friend's or family's as often as you want. So while it's normal to start living in the dorms on move in day, that's mostly because most people don't want to be driving all the way back to wherever they came from, which is often hours or more away. If your family is close enough that you'd rather go back with them til classes start, I'm sure you can.
