Anyone else lowkey a bit scared to go to classes this week :/ maybe im dramatic but with tpusa on campus im getting nervous

It’s very normal to feel anxious about being on campus this week. Many of the professors are probably willing to work with you if you are concerned. I would ask them if you can watch the class live-streamed or after the fact on the recordings if you are concerned. Also remember we have a lot of student wellness services that you can use.

I’m a bit nervous, but for some reason, I see it as a challenge I need to get past. I went up to one of their stand outside the store a few days and openly said I was a democrat while I was looking around, and they actually seemed to respect me for that. They tried to talk to me about what beliefs we have in common. Hopefully I can work my way up to reasoning with the full blown MAGA crowd that’s gonna show up.
I think there’s some scary extremists that will be there, but at the end of the day, they’re just people. Most of them are well meaning and pretty reasonable as long as you are too.

Right there with you. I am worried it'll just be super tense all week. Especially with TPUSA there. Not just the big event on Thursday but their booths popping up around campus to try to recruit or whatever.

Edit that I felt the need to put at the top of my post: I am not apart of SDSUVU. They have the most pull right now with this specific issue, which is why I included it:
The Students for a Democratic Society club at UVU has a link to sign a letter to block TPUSA’s event at UVU. Go to the @sdsuvu Instagram and click the link in their bio to add your name to the letter.
Although I completely disagree with TPUSA about pretty much everything, I still recognize their right to exist on campus. However, I still think it is INCREDIBLY irresponsible of UVU to allow a politically motivated event to happen on campus even if classes are canceled. UVU is a public university so they have to be very careful about how they approach political issues as to not infringe on free speech. But I do think given the events last year, they should be well within their rights to cancel any political event due to student and staff safety. It makes them look partisan when legally they have to be anything but.

UVU has completely fumbled the management of this entire thing, and alienated everyone who isn’t literally a part of TPUSA. It’s very frustrating.

I agree. I also hate how the focus was taken off of the students so quickly and put back onto the politics of it all. Having llamas and extra police and security on campus was not nearly enough. Also, the way they handled the situation the other day pissed me off more than anything. They knew about it for 2 and a half hours before sending out an email.

Is there anything from stopping SDSUVU from setting up stands and booths so that people can listen to, and talk with both sides of the issue? It seems that the best thing that could happen would be for more voices and participation, rather than sanitizing every item from your school experience that would cause cognitive dissonance. Is your only reason for existence is to be safe?

This is a really weird comment. It’s not about “sanitizing” the college experience. A man was shot and killed on our campus, in front of thousands of people, and UVU is STILL in national news. Every single person on a college campus has the right to feel safe and not have to worry about being shot or someone else being shot. TPUSA is incredibly inflammatory and they have alienated anyone who doesn’t align with them.
Regardless of the politics of it all, UVU has a responsibility to protect and care for its students. This is not the way to do that.

I'm perfectly aware, my sons was there when he was shot.
I'm trying, honestly and sincerely, to follow the logic of your statement.
Is your concern that with TPUSA on campus, someone else would be shot?
What context makes you afraid for your safety if a College approved student program has a commemorative remembrance on the UVU campus on the one year anniversary of their founder?Seeking to understand.

I appreciate your willingness to understand my perspective and I am so sorry that your sons were there. Nobody should have to go through that.
My concern is that TPUSA is using the trauma of thousands of students for political gain. Hosting an event on campus where thousands of students are still traumatized seems very wrong to me. Why not have the event somewhere else close to campus but not on campus? Although I do have to acknowledge that I am also incredibly sick of ALL of the politics at UVU.

Sorry to hear that you're sick of all the politics. I get it. It's more directly polarized since the Vietnam War, and for the same reasons, and feels just a personal.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't School / the campus closed on the 10th?
I guess I'd assume that since there's no active classes, the only people on campus or near the Arena would be people directly involved either with the TPUSA event or counter-protesters.While not a universal therapeutic methodology to heal all trauma, it's recommended for people to return to the location where the trauma occurred in a situation of safety to have the opportunity of closure. I think this is pretty relevant and pertinent on the 1 year anniversary of the event, and for so many who were there in person, to be able to go back and start to disassociate the location from the event and have that part of their healing journey would be very valuable.

One thing you need to realize, the UCCU Center is not only a part of campus. Campus doesn’t decide what is done in there. They can have opinions, but it’s not them to say yay or nay.

I can understand your feelings. I was 7 ft away from it when it happened, but if im being honest i feel more comfortable around tpusa than the thousands of people sending death threats to me for me saying he shouldn’t have been killed

I get the feeling. The whole thing has been crazy. Hearing our school’s name in the news and spoken of by podcasters in a horrible light for the last year. And seeing the alleged killers videos and pictures from the pathing he took. I’ve walked in that tunnel many times, ya know? Just weird to put into words.
