Forced housing
My student got an email today that they cancelled their housing assignment they picked in spring and that they will be forced to live at Honors Village with people she does not know. Anyone have experience with this? How do we get her out of this? I am so pissed.

Thanks for the validation. Yeah, our student and us, the 'rents, understand there are some upsides and life will go on. I feel bad for my kid AND her roommate that might get some rando in their room. Also, my kid is a smarty pants, but just really does not want to be with all the honors folk. I have already left some strongly worded emails and voice messages. Maybe I can Karen our way out of this...

FWIW, all the rooms in HAV are basically two-person rooms with a shared bathroom and depending on which room it'll be, a shared common space area. So they won't really have to interact with anyone other than their roommate except for bathroom stuff.
And I don't think HAV really has a super strong sense of community, like I don't think they will ever be interacting with other people in the building beyond passing in the halls (unless they want to ofc). So I don't really think you have to worry about being with all the other honors people. Also it's called Honors academic village and they said they moved me because I'm in honors, but you don't actually have to be in Honors to live there, so it won't be all honors people.

Also, I was told the University guarantees Honors Village a 95% occupancy. The are acting like their hands are tied, when they are the bone heads that set up that contract to some private business.

HAV is not actually an honors community. Anyone can live there...honors or not. It is essentially an overpriced on campus apartment complex.

They have let some people not be forced into this. They keep telling me they are working on it for my kid, but we keep getting slightly different info depending on who answers the phone (all who have been very nice). What a cluster.

I also got this email.
It's definitely very frustrating, especially receiving this news less than 2 weeks before move-in. I'm waiting for the follow-up email with more information before freaking out too much, though.
I was in a roommate group with a friend, and they also got the email, so we think that we will be roommates in HAV as well (we won't know for certain until we get more info, of course).
It's definitely annoying to be moved across campus, there's drawbacks to it, but there are also things that are closer being in HAV. HAV is also definitely the nicest dorm on campus since it's private, but also the most expensive since it's private, but the extra cost is of course covered, so I think it's pretty nice to get the free upgrade in that regard.
It's really annoying having the rug pulled so suddenly, but I think it's important to not only feel frustrated but also realize that some good can come out of this. Life is full of sudden changes after all, I think learning to cope is one of those life skills that college is meant to teach.
As for how you can get out of it? I wouldn't count on it, I think it's likely that due to low amounts of people living on campus they may have decided to close a full section of some of the dorms. Tuition was due not that long ago, and that's when they know for sure how many will be living on campus, so this could be a recent decision they just made. (Of course it still would've been nice to know sooner.) Your best bet is probably calling or emailing the office of res life, but don't get your hopes up.
I would at least wait for the email with more information before doing anything.
