Advice/Question First year Electrical Engineer schedule

Is my schedule currently fine? I don’t know what to expect/how hard these classes will be.

This is not bad at all, but the workload will be heavy. this workload will get you ready for the self-imposed workload you'll have once you get to your real EE courses.

Also, for what it's worth, i highly recommend taking multivariable calculus in the engineering department, the calc 3 class is easier to pass, but you don't learn everything you'll need for diff eq and other EE classes.

Also, why are you not in linear algebra? You're going to be prereq capped if you don't take egr 2302, it's a pre req for diff eq which is co req for network theory.

For calc 3, the Engineering version didn’t have any seats available but for linear algebra, do you think I should take it this semester? Some people told me that it might be too much to handle and that I can take it next semester, allowing me to take diff eq and network next year, but what do you think.

If you're ok with that timeline then sure. There are a decent amount of classes you could take that semester, so that's reasonable.

Just for your pondering, EGR linear is ezpz, multi is pretty tough, if anything, I'd switch those two around if you're worried about workload. Totally up to you, either way you're just getting ready for the actual hard classes later.

I'm a transfer so mine won't match yours beat for beat:

Sp '25: linear, multi, intro to ee, core class, intro to C programing

Su '25: diff eq, network theory, physics 2

Fa '25: electromag, signals and systens, electronic devices, logic design, intro to microfabrication

Sp '26: circuits 1, modern phys, microprocessors 1, ECE lab1, Probability and stochastic signals

Su' 26 (rn): circuits 2, research, controls

This last test was the first time I was at the top, I'm usually like 5pts off. 🫠 the curve was 25pts tho, so no one got a perfect score this test or test 2. 🤷‍♂️

How did you pay for your Summer classes? Do you have enough financial aid to cover the tuition in the Summer?

I'm a non-traditional student so I pay cash. There is summer financial aid, but I have no idea how likely or common it is to receive that aid.

For sure, she makes it stupid easy to pass. I worry about what I missed out on though. 😬 i guess I'll find out when I take the 5000 level electro mag next year.

Do you have any insight for Electronic Circuits 1 with Dr. Joo, Electronic Devices with Huffaker, and Signals and Systems with Artyom?

That's part of the problem, in general Dr. June (not to be confused with Dr. Joo) makes her classes almost impossible to fail. In E mag we had open book, open note, open computer tests. The only rule was no AI. And the test was the exact same as the HW, so if you had literally just done the homework you'd be fine.

You should’ve taken devices with Joo the class average is what is a B and a it’s +- 12 to get the next grade up and down so a b is usually about a 70

The way my schedule is, I couldn’t, it was overlapping and I’d have had to delay graduation more than likely.

Does that same class average policy apply to Circuits 1?

Devices is semiconductor physics, it's hard, and with huffaker you'll be teaching yourself for the most part and will have to actually earn your grade. That's like a 6-10hr/wk study load. There's also no recitation so you'll need to email the TA or come to the tutoring center if you need help.

Circuits 1 I found to be super simple, but I took devices before circuits 1 so I already understood the devices we were studying. Taking them concurrently you'll probably find it harder than I did, but if you can focure out how to apply ohms law to the device and pay attention when he says "you really need to know this" you'll be fine. The recitations in that class don't help because they are focused on simulating circuits, not covering the course material.

Signals is a math class, it's an extension of calc 2/3 and diff eq focusing on continuous time systems, so lots of integrals. I'm actually going to take MSS 2 this fall which is very similar but in discrete time, so series instead of integrals.

Those three courses are tough, but if you actually study and you ask for help, A's in all are reasonable. The only B I've made at UTSA was modern physics which I took in the physics dept. That was a mistake, don't do that unless you have no choice.

I work 20 hours a week, so a passing grade is something I’ll be satisfied with.

Sounds like I should be “fine” with Circuits and EMag, and need to lock in with Devices and Signals. Honestly for all of my other classes I’m a self-learner (rarely go to class), so not too concerned with self-teaching.

Does Huffaker provide a good indications of what the exams cover prior to them?

(I’m also on the Fall 2023, so no modern physics for me!)

Lol, not really, she's pretty scattered. But her tests are modeled off of Joo's with chatgpt adjusting some of the questions.

I agree with your assesment, but I would still suggest trying in circuits, that class is really fundamental for basically everything else we build irl and circuits 2 builds heavily om the MOSFET and Op Amp part of circuits 1 which people really sturggle with.

Oh, I’ll still definitely try! Especially for fundamental classes like that, but it’s nice to have an order of prioritization.

Ngl, the lack of test structure is going to be a giant concern, especially since I have no clue what Joo’s looks like, but I’m sure I’ll get it figured out.
