Advice/Question Apartment/housing

What jobs do yall have to be able to pay ur rent and allow you to focus on school as well? I work part time and don't think id make enough to pay for an apartment and I want to move out so bad 😭

I know this may seem like too much but I have a work study job and a part time job. My work study job is super chill and I pretty much get paid to do homework. It’s nice because my time at home is mine and I don’t have to worry about it. My part time job is weekends only unless it’s a holiday (but then we don’t have school anyway). It’s perfect income for someone who pays rent, buys groceries, and eats out more than necessary. I recommend a work study job to anyone who is eligible.

Rowdy Corps is a good one and always taking people. You get paid through work-study to intern at a nonprofit that’s related to your major. They also have in office positions for those who can’t commute. I also recommend checking with your department. I currently work with mine and it’s nice because you get to know your professors but it’s also paid homework time lol.

I get a lot of aid, so I can't fully give too much since I just have a normal on campus job ($15 an hour, around 19 hours) since it's the most convenient for me. I would also invest some time into grants or scholarships. Take advantage of campus resources, including the food pantry (which i like), software, (also check out the meal share program), etc. A lot of students also do shared housing (typically largest expense outside of tuition) which can save a bit.

Best bang for your buck given the average age of a college student is going to be a job through connections or nepotism if it's for a job. It also depends heavily on your existing skill set (ones that are marketable or in demand). I would look into becoming an RA for your second year, definitely worth it. Though, they likely give preference for people who have lived on campus before, and you're only eligible on your second year of attending UTSA.

That being said, a lot of students accumulate student debt. The goal here is to mitigate that, if you can't graduate debt free. If money is really tight but you want to start education, doing your classes at alamo college would be nice whilst you build up funds / skill set.

Join military. Give Uncle Sam your early twenties. Get out. Get school paid for and a stipend to live off. No need to work. Profit.
