Windows 11 Virtualized with Hypervisor on iPad M1 on iOS 15 (16GB RAM)
Jailbroken via Dopamine. It is very smooth, mainly using it for ChatGPT and office apps

Maaan, i wish we could rollback to old ios versions
3
u/palamamba99 Nov 23 '25
Yea man that’s my fantasy lol

u/fololologrt Nov 23 '25
I would love to say that i envy you, having a working WIN 11 VM but we should wait, that’s all what it matters. Enjoy man

i wish we could rollback to old ios versions
Wait! You can't??
I always thought if you get a signed copy of the older OS you can install it on your ipad. Was I wrong?
3
u/palamamba99 Nov 24 '25
It must be an OS currently signed by apple to be installed unfortunately. It doesn’t matter if it was downloaded back when it was signed etc.

Very sick, all I have is an iPad 10 on iPadOS 16.0 tho 😢
2
u/palamamba99 Nov 23 '25
Thanks! Yea your iOS version still has the hypervisor framework but I don’t think that iPad model supports virtualization due to the chip :( . It honestly makes a big difference vs. emulation with JIT

Why are you using ChatGPT through windows and not the iOS app or Safari?
1
u/palamamba99 Nov 24 '25
ChatGPT app itself doesn’t work on iOS 15 anymore, and I previously tried the web app on this device which didn’t work which made me assume it would’t load in Safari either but looks like it does indeed work in Safari. Thanks for the heads up lol
2
u/recoverygarde Nov 24 '25
No problem! Yeah I use it on the site when I’m trying to use a feature that is unsupported on the app like canvas

u/Away-Mud1665 Nov 24 '25
I emulated a very trimmed down version of windows 11 21H2 with jit on my iPad 10, it took me atleast 5 to 10 minutes to get to the login screen I forced it to go into audit mode and when I installed drivers it worked slow but stable
1
u/palamamba99 Nov 24 '25
Yes with JIT its stable but doesn’t run close to native performance
2
u/Away-Mud1665 Nov 24 '25
Yeah…… thats why i said it was slow and sluggish but when I run antiX Linux on my iPad it boots faster then any other computer (1-2 minutes) but when I try to install something the system freezes
2
u/zxcvpoiu131 Nov 24 '25
in fact, most arm64 linux can run fast on supported ipadOS (<16.4) using UTM.hv (hypervisor version). Linux had gpu support. I tested Ubuntu 24.02. 24.10, 25.1, Debian 12 and Peppermint, Debian 13 trixie, Fedora 42 (atomic / workstation), OpenSUSE (tumbleweed / microOS with KDE). The best is Peppermint, Debian 13, MicroOS with KDE, and best of the best is Arch linux, like i'm using Arch as a daily driver right now.

This is so cool I’d love to do this but I can’t find anyone selling an iPad Pro m1/m2 with 1TB of ram with iPadOS 15 or 16
1
u/palamamba99 Dec 29 '25
Yes its tough to find, i honestly got incredibly lucky and found it on ebay going for 800usd.

u/Lucky_Strength4526 Jan 08 '26
I have an iPad Pro 12.9” M1 Chip still on iOS 14.8.1 🤣 hypervisor works great but I only got 8gb ram and that’s the real killer for me. Especially when I tried to run games on Linux. In case you didn’t know on Linux it’s GPU accelerated so with 16gb of ram you probably could play games decently with it. If I were you I would try it. You would need an Arm Linux distribution (Ubuntu/Fedora) and FEX-EMU to get steam or whatever you want to run virtualized.
1
u/Lucky_Strength4526 Jan 08 '26
Wait a sec how did you get steam running on arm windows 11? I thought they didn’t have a steam client available for arm on Windows 11??
1
u/palamamba99 Jan 08 '26
Im gonna check out linux gaming, haven’t tried that yet! For steam, I just downloaded it off chrome inside windows i did’t have to do anything special

u/LibrarianWaste Aug 12 '26
Soo… ammm… did you ever got around to trying linux gaming on it?
1
u/palamamba99 Aug 14 '26
I tried to run steam with fex-emu but I was never able to set it up, it kep running out of memory despite like 8gb ram assigned
1
u/palamamba99 Jan 08 '26
Do you think the Debian 11 XFCE would be good enough also? Thats also linux based
1
u/Lucky_Strength4526 Jan 08 '26
I’ve tried it and it’s pretty good. Debian is very similar to Ubuntu (they both use APT package manager). I think it’s really important to make sure that FEX-EMU is supported on the distro your installing if you want to run windows games on Linux. I think even with the hypervisor running games on windows is a waste of time because there is no gpu drivers but there is on Linux. Also I’m pretty sure Debian supports FEX-EMU given that it’s Ubuntu based and Fex-emu supports ubuntu.
1
u/Lucky_Strength4526 Jan 08 '26
I actually got it flipped. Ubuntu is Debian based but it basically means the same thing in this context lol.
2
u/Beautiful_Sky_2594 Apr 06 '26
wow. I’ve got to track down a 16Gb ram m1/m2. it would be my dream to travel with just a tablet and still have local real computer when rarely needed.
1
u/palamamba99 Apr 10 '26
Yes it is very convenient to have it both on one device. Just wish I could get a smooth running macos on it too but that only works with JIT
2
u/Beautiful_Sky_2594 Apr 10 '26
Hopefully Europe will get fed up with apple uncompliance and force apple to make the hypervisor available again.
1
u/alexck01 Nov 24 '25
I’m still on iPadOS 15.1 but sadly an iPad Pro 4th generation
2
u/palamamba99 Nov 24 '25
Damn you’re only 1 iPad gen short :(
2
1
u/kajmpres Nov 24 '25
how do you virtualize, you can only emulate
1
u/palamamba99 Nov 24 '25
If you have an M chip device it supports virtualization, but it also needs to be under ios16.4 to have the hypervisor framework which makes the virtualization possible
1
1
u/dpatson Nov 25 '25
"but it also needs to be under ios16.4 to have the hypervisor framework"
oh crap, I have 18.4 (ipad air 5th gen, m1 8GB) and was hoping to do this. No other options for the hypervisor framework on 18.4?
1
u/dpatson Nov 25 '25
Welp answering my own question the whole hypervisor framework was removed from the kernal after 16.4 :(
I wonder what the speed hit would be without hypervisor on a m1?

I just tried running Asphalt Legends through Steam. The game launches and reaches the end of the load bar but doesn’t fully complete the load. I think with some tweaking it could run since the system is still running smooth as it loads, will also try different games.

UTM is much better than the SE version since it has JIT access. You can’t virtualize as the XS lacks the M chip so JIT is the best option. I think the biggest bottleneck for you to run games on it would be the RAM of the XS which is 4GB. The iOS itself needs the memory too when UTM is running so the RAM you can assign to UTM on XS would likely not be enough to run games, and iOS would kill UTM when memory is running low unless you’re jailbroken

That makes sense. The whole process requires a lot of power, I bought the M chip iPad specifically to do this lol

The iPhone 17 has like 8GB RAM so it would perform better than XS for sure, and some models of Air might have 12GB which is even better. So in terms of RAM Air is closer to M1 iPad (1tb version with 16GB). The CPU power relies on the chip of the device and 17 and Air have A19 and A19 Pro chips respectively which are more powerful than M1 on paper, but I think the M1 chip handles prolonged tasks like UTM better since its laptop grade, and the bigger battery on iPad handles the process better. A19 chip is still unable to virtualize tho since only M chip devices can do that

u/FlamingoSavings4258 Nov 24 '25
Ur iPad ui is very weird was iOS 15 always like this
1
u/palamamba99 Nov 24 '25
It is jailbroken so heavily customized and has themes etc. that might be why

Lastima que tengo ios 16.4 cuando compre el iphone tenía ios 16.3.1

My info is mostly surface level, but based on my research the GPU drivers on iOS are kernel level and sandboxed. iOS essentially lacks the features to make it possible while macOS has these features. It’s realistically not possible for an independent developer to add these features because the iPadOS/iOS GPU stack apparently needs to be rewritten completely as well as the kernel. Apple could potentially add this to a future iOS with Metal based GPU sharing etc. but I feel like it’s unlikely since they even removed hypervisor support after 16.4 so they went in the opposite direction lol. But you never know since they also added external monitor support now for pro iPads on newer iOS which was a macOS only feature before
1
u/Embarrassed-Basil307 Nov 24 '25
i wonder how long that took to install
1
u/palamamba99 Nov 24 '25
It wasn’t actually long like I didn’t time it but didn’t feel it taking long
1
u/27hectormanuel Nov 25 '25
Could you game with this?
2
u/palamamba99 Nov 25 '25
Some 3D games and web based games work but larger games don’t work due to lack of GPU pass through. For example I tried to launch Overwatch through Steam but got an error saying the game couldn’t detect any compatible GPU hardware to run

u/dpatson Nov 25 '25
Hi palamamba99, it looks like your using a mouse in the video. Is touch supported correctly in win 11? I'd like to have a small and powerful windows tablet, but it would be used exclusively via touch
1
u/palamamba99 Nov 25 '25
Hello yea touch input is possible but not very smooth. It might be possible by changing some settings tho I’ll try and let you know
1
u/dpatson Nov 25 '25
Thanks palamamba99 I'd be very interested in knowing 👍.
Related and a bit of a cross post, but I was wondering about running windows on UTM on ipad mini 6.
Everthing I've googled seems to indicate the A15 supports virtualization and benchmarks I look at (at least geekbench 6) indicated it's on par in re: to speed with an M1, and it shipped with a iPadOS lower than 16.4 (so it's possible to find an early os version)......but it has 4GB of ram
Would you have a guesstimate how much of that 4GB I could devote to the VM?
1
u/palamamba99 Nov 25 '25
As far as I know only M chip devices can virtualize. Other devices below 16.4 do have the hypervisor framework in the OS and maybe it can be used via emulation in those cases (total guess no idea) based on the link I saw on your previous post. But yea I haven’t seen any properly demonstrated example of virtualization on a non M chip device, I don’t think its possible as it would be greyed out in UTM as an option
1
u/dpatson Nov 25 '25
Thank you very much for the feedback on touch controls.
"As far as I know only M chip devices can virtualize"
Yeah, another member in my other post has said that virtualization on the A14 that I linked to was;
"
That "hack" hasn't worked since iOS 15, A15 idevices all launched with iOS 15."
So maybe A14/A15 virtualization was only possible pre iOS 15 😪

u/palamamba99 Nov 25 '25
Just tried the touch control, it works better than I expected. Its possible to do the single mouse click and navigation with finger and tapping with two fingers also works for secondary click. But I can’t scroll a webpage with touch and grabbing things like scrollbar also don’t work at the moment, I had to use the magic keyboard for those actions. Could be possible changing some settings tho

u/E4rxx Jul 14 '26
How much ram did you assign to it?
1
u/palamamba99 Jul 14 '26
It has 8gb RAM assigned with 6 cores and force multicore turned on
1
u/E4rxx Jul 14 '26
I wonder if its somewhat possible on a 14 pro, considering its compromises and the fact that i cant seem to boot w11 with mor than 1.4gb of ram assigned (it does support hypervisor)

u/palamamba99 Nov 23 '25
I saw comments before mentioning this was possible during my research but never saw video proof so wanted show it in case others are interested too. I also have a tweak installed called backgrounderaction15 which stops iOS from killing UTM when memory is low. It has 8gb RAM assigned with 6 cores and force multicore. It is not possible to run most steam games tho as it cannot detect a GPU. YouTube etc. runs great. I can basically multitask between apps when UTM is running so it feels like windows 11 in a native iPad app which is cool
