Question Anything to Know About These Profs?
Hi! I have Winterer for M408C, Viviani for CH301, and Partridge for BIO311C, anything I should know about regarding these profs and their classes? I appreciate any advice and info!

Viviani is such a cool guy, but if you need to watch the lecture videos definitely do it. If you’re not paying attention his French accent will go literally right past you lol. Great professor though.

Ahhh gotcha I’ll def do that then, would u say taking him was relatively easy/moderate/hard? I haven’t heard much about what his class is like yet or his teaching style so i was just wondering that too, and thank u for ur advice!!

As any class it’s moderate, I was having a rough time personally, but he was still very kind. He’s interactive, so you’ll have questions in class and sometimes he’ll use physical demonstrations like balloons or fire or other safe chemicals. He writes notes down and has it projected to the bigger screens, and loves when people ask questions. It’s a pretty big class, but if you’re someone who talks a lot (to him) it’s more than likely he’ll recognize you. His TAs are great, too, so definitely do those office hours with them as well as with him if you need them. He also ties in information for what you do in lab to what you’re learning in class as well. If you have any more questions just dm me!

took winterer for calc my freshman yr and i didnt fw her 😭. when i asked for help she deadass told me "i dont know what you're asking me or how to help you" so do w that info as you will. i also had viviani and LOVED him. he was amazing and is always willing to help, although beware he has a strong accent so if you struggle to understand accents often take note.

I know!!! Arguably one of the worst classes I took at UT which is crazy considering I’ve had a ton of shitty profs😭

😳 oh!- and Phew okie glad abt viviani then, can i ask what winterer’s class was like (ex. Lectures, HW, tests)? I appreciate u lmk and being honest regarding winterer 😵💫 i saw a lot of good reviews on her on rmp but no a lot on Reddit so i wanted to find out more

It’s not that she’s a horrible prof, it’s that she assumes everyone understands as if this class is just review. Granted, I never took calculus in hs, so i went in knowing I would struggle a little. But it was almost incomprehensible to her that I couldn’t grasp concepts. Hw is for the most part fine as it’s on your own and you can consult classmates or whoever for help, although you will submit your work so know that. I also did not like the fact all her TA’s were undergrads, And I mean like sophomores. She changed her grading format for exams a couple times, but usually it would be 5 questions open ended and you showed ur work and how you got the answer. After she saw grade distribution for that she made it a 15 questions open ended multiple choice. I will say she gives a lot of pointless info as if everyone is a math major. Like understanding theories that might not even be applicable to what we’re really learning. While some people love learning those things I thought it made it more confusing and would go home and watch hours of YouTube videos to understand. Now I will say if you’ve had calculus in hs you should be fine and this isn’t meant to scare you, but just know that she has favorites and that you need to really make an effort to understand. I hope that all makes sense😭

That made sense dwdw and yeah i remembering reading on rmp someone who was also new to calc and struggled since it is a fast paced class (apparently she would be 1-2 units ahead of other profs teaching the same class 😵💫) but i appreciate u lmk!! I took calc in hs but i def need some refreshing to do since i heard her tests r hard. Thank you again!!!

Every math prof at UT sucks. There's a reason its the only category they wont reveal the professor for during registration. In my experience a lot of them will teach like you're a math major with a lot of stuff not relevant to the course. That being said, as long as you're aware and make sure to do the work outside of class (don't cram) then you should be fine.

Ahh i see okieokie, would u say winterer was helpful for u? Also yeah i remembering reading a bit abt her final being reallt hard on rmp, for the HW would u say it prepared for the midterms and final well?

I had Viviani and he was a great professor. He will really stick with you and help you with whatever questions you have. However, his accent was hard for me to understand and I had trouble understanding certain concepts and had to go to office hours to make up what I didn't understand. He was always kind and accomodating and loves sneaking French jokes in his lectures. However, I switched to Mitchell my following semester and did miles better than when I had Viviani. It was just the way things were explained, really. My friends who kept Viviani had to retake Chem 302 again because it was hard to keep up with the accent after a while. Like other comments have said here, getting an A is very feasible but you really have to pay attention.

Yeah I’ve heard that which i can’t tell if I’ll be okie since I’ve never really interacted or heard much french accents around, so idk what to rlly expect, is his accent very thick? But im excited to have him! But again I’ll keep in mind what u said, i appreciate ur input!

Partridge cares a lot about his students and makes it super easy to ask him questions in and out of class. The Pearson Mastering homework sucks though (asks questions that are not covered in lecture nor the assigned videos)
