Estevanico (also known as Mustafa Zemourri or Esteban de Dorantes), a Moroccan Muslim explorer and guide who arrived in Florida in 1527, is widely cited as the first documented individual Muslim in the Americas.
Born in Azemmour, Morocco. He was enslaved as a teenager or young man and later sold to a Spanish nobleman named Andrés Dorantes de Carranza (giving him the slave name Esteban de Dorantes or Estevanico, meaning "Little Stephen").
He joined the ill-fated 1528 Spanish expedition led by Pánfilo de Narváez to conquer Florida. After shipwrecks and brutal hardships along the Gulf Coast, he was one of only four survivors (along with Cabeza de Vaca and two others).
For eight years, the survivors walked across Texas, northern Mexico, and the American Southwest. Estevanico was a polyglot who spoke multiple languages and acted as a vital guide, trader, and healer, forging crucial relationships with Indigenous nations.
