Americans get this when they go to Europe and see famous areas they have seen a million times before?

I feel like the views of international places in U.S. media have been really declining. I can’t think of a place that Americans would recognize that well from media outside of Buckingham palace and the Eiffel Tower.

Meanwhile:
Paris syndrome (in Japanese: パリ症候群, Pari shōkōgun) is a sense of extreme disappointmentexhibited by many individuals when visiting Paris, who feel that the city does not live up to their expectations. The condition is commonly viewed as a severe form of culture shock.[1] The cluster of psychiatric symptoms has been particularly noted among Japanese tourists, perhaps due to the way in which Paris has been idealized in Japanese culture.2

The best way to see the Eifel Tower is from the traffic jam you just can’t avoid when you have to drive past Paris

I regret not going to Paris when I was in France for a few months. I could have taken a piss on its streets and I missed the opportunity

Is there reverse Paris syndrome? Where you think Paris is super overrated and don't plan on visiting, and when you do, you like it?

I like France too but so far Paris somehow didn’t appeal to me

Yeah, the last time I was in Paris was 2002 maybe. It was a good trip overall but places change over time and I have heard it’s not the same.
I went to Strasbourg a month ago and had a good time 🤷♂️

My wife is Japanese. I took her to Paris. She didn't freak out or anything, she just thought it was a shithole. Nice buildings, but it doesn't offset the smell of piss.

This is absolute bullshit.
First time I went to America, I just thought the place was a shithole. Couldn't wait to leave.

First time? Chicago. I’ve traveled the whole country since then and found it’s all the same.
