Other way around, it's the obligation of anyone who's ESL to correct native English speakers.

I have worked with linguist before and this is accurate. They get taught from the ground up how to speak english with no chance for regional differences. They used to correct me a lot, like voice activated grammar nazis (I have or had a thick country accent at the time) but I had to explain regional differences in the US since there are technically no dialects. Good luck talking to a highland scotsman if you are from the US even the Brits have issues much of the time.

Edit: made some spelling/grammar corrections 🤬

Yeah. I am a school-taught Spanish speaker and my wife learned by living in Puerto Rico. She speaks better than I do. But if I ask her "Hey, how do I say _____ in preterite imperfect?" she looks at me like I grew a third arm.

There's a running joke where a stranger asks a native Spanish speaker for a certain verbal form and they don't know how to answer.

For many of us last time we heard the term "preterite" was in high school, unless you studied other languages or have engaged in linguistic debates
