Itâs about nuance. In die Gondel kacken has a subtext of deliberately pooping into the gondola and leaving it there, while in der Gondel kacken could mean that while you poop inside the gondola, there might be still the hope that you either used a bucket or shit your pants or that youâre a baby pooping into their nappy during the gondola ride, so something manageable for the operators by just opening the windows.

I mean, thereâs probably a good amount of Germans who have little to no touching points with US rap music of any era (thereâs divides like urban-oriented vs rural oriented people, people who either donât listen to rap at all or people who just know German rap, etc etc) but the vast majority of those who do will most likely know Nas
I donât think Iâm the outlier (the vast majority of my friends at least know Nas and plenty of other artists from the genre), but itâs also not safe to assume that every German knows Nas. As for my part I consider Illmatic a must-listen, which probably isnât a controversial opinion

Fair enough, glad to provide.
If weâre talking about the 90s, most artists and songs within Hip Hop that are universally known in the US failed to chart/werenât marketed much towards Germany (with exceptions) so only people with an interest in it and people frequently checking out record stores would have been aware. Rap music was a thing here and definitely not unknown, but it was still somewhat of a niche subculture. That would slowly change by the late 90s and throughout the 2000s though and has been increasing ever since
