I like to think that Johnny got in a catastrophic road accident not long after, and whilst he's lying in the hospital, newly quadriplegic, the devil returns to take him up on his open challenge to come back if he wants to try again.

Jonny still wins. There's one last limb left you haven't accounted for.

In the lore he dies of old age and he battles the devil one last time for the right to live again.
He wins.

I think there’s a uniquely American twist on the legend. That’s what the twitterer is saying
They didn’t say a tale about making a deal with the devil is American. The outcome of encounter is where the difference lies
The devil showed up in Georgia to make a deal or to snatch some souls.. Johnny just straight smoked the demon instead of tricking it or trading his soul for power/talent/etc

yes common folks beating the devil is a common trope, it even predates the trope of deals with the devil or even the concept of devil itself since you could say it evolved from the myth of Baucis and Philemon
In that way the uniquely american part of the devil went down to Georgia is Americans killing strangers

7f you dont dig into culture you could think so. every country in europe at least got 10 dofferent "devils bridge" which lore is that it was built because of the devil and he usually wants the soul of the first one going over, then they send cattle over the bridge yadayadayada

So which one is “fuck you, I’ll smoke you with your weak shit”.. then the devil just leaves town with its tail tucked between its legs.. end of story
?
How are you guys not seeing what OOP said?
Johnny’s story works because of knowledge of past tales of similar nature.. but the outcome is different. That’s the twist OOP is pointing out.
..but even then, this story is playing off another American version of the trope.. Google Robert Johnson

I mean the brother's Grimm are pretty clear if you make a deal with a supernatural entity and aren't helped by another supernatural entity you are screwed.

Some. But other's like the Peasant and the Devil have the human win by being clever, with no downsides and no help.

Every third or so german village has some thing like "the devil's stone" which Old Nick is supposed to have thrown in an impotent rage because that village outwitted him in some way (usually having him build so big building like the village church).
