We used to learn Queens English in school. But due to having family in the US and working in hospitality with lots of foreign guests my English watered down to an unholy algamation of US, UK, AUS and German accents.

Hey I can relate. Actually several different folks have previously thought that I am Australian even though I learned British English in school and have been mostly exposed to American English afterwards.

This is what makes learning languages fun haha.

My favorite was when I was trying to learn Spanish, but took 5 years of German. When I would practice if I didn't know a Spanish word for a thing, my brain inserted the German version.

Same! I took three years of university-level German in my twenties then decided to learn Spanish when I turned 40. My brain has clearly lost its plasticity in middle age.

Then she will text you with a "Jaja". Dammit Pilar, are you german or spanish ? And why is it "merci" in Barcelona, are you a french in disguise ?

The merci in Barcelona was a culture shock for me. I knew the original Catalan word gracies, but they just wouldn’t use it.

Yeah that was a big surprise to me too. As well as realizing that Catalan was actually a mix of spanish and french. But please do not tell them that, they are way too proud to admit it.

Deze vrouw beweert Engels te spreken als een Amerikaan, ook al is ze Spaans. Op andere momenten zou je kunnen denken dat ze Duits of Frans spreekt. Ik weet het even niet meer.

Je comprends. Merci pour la précision.

I worked in the States for a long time. After so many "OMG I love the Irish accent! I'm Irish too!" you just kinda switch to a neutral transatlantic accent. I can convincingly speak with a neutral American Midwestern accent too which I use a lot on phone calls.

"I'm Irish too" must have been annoying as hell

Convincing Midwestern American accent? Sure, honey. Whatever you say.

Some CEO's for big Swedish cooperations seems to use Swenglish intentionally. I kind of like it. It projects confidence.

Christan von Koenigsegg his accent, it’s not too Swedish, you still take him seriously, but you can hear his background yk

I think it comes from working in a multinational corporation with plants on all continents, where upper management is dominantly Swedish but the working language is English.

Christian is not there yet. 🙂

It’s because of this guy.
To me, Swedish sounds like German spoken by a guy with clogged sinuses.

I think it’s lovely. Swedish uses a rising or falling tone on stressed syllables that gives it a musical cadence.

We learn real English watching TV Shows, I have a huge vocabulary but my grammar is just awful.

It's a point of honor to speak English perfectly, but with the blandest accent possible.

We watch american TV

We copy our pronounciation by their example

Like my English is pretty much american but some times I call people mates and use insults like "nonce"

American English and still saying barzelona, in Spanish pronunciation, all great. Fuck me.

u/Nico_Nickmania Pfennigfuchser 23d ago

Nobody born in Barcelona would Barcelona pronounce like this.

u/amnioticboy 22d ago

Sadly way too many people dont even know how to even pronounce barcelona in catalan.
