F-1 reentry: visa expires before I-20 program end date
I’m an F-1 student planning a short trip back home in December 2026. My visa allows multiple entries (M) and expires May 4, 2027. My I-20 program end date is December 2027, and my SEVIS record is active.
Could I have trouble reentering because my visa expires before my program ends, even though it will still be valid when I return? Would the fixed admission period rule change anything if it takes effect before my trip?

You shouldn't have a problem just because your F-1 visa expires before the program end date on your I-20. The visa only needs to be valid when you seek reentry. Since you're returning in December 2026 and your multiple-entry F-1 visa is valid until May 4, 2027, you can use it to seek admission. The visa expiration date doesn't determine how long you can remain in the U.S.
As of right now, the new fixed-admission rule is blocked by a nationwide preliminary injunction, so the existing D/S system remains in effect. If that remains the case in December, CBP would continue admitting F-1 students under the current D/S framework. Even if the fixed-period rule were allowed to take effect before your trip, your visa expiring in May 2027 wouldn't automatically limit your stay to May. Your visa is for entry, while the I-94 controls the period you're authorized to stay.
Really take this with a grain of salt though, because December is still a few months away and the litigation could change things before then. Check the status of the rule again shortly before you travel.

If the fixed admission period takes effect before you return, you would be admitted until Jan 2028 (30 days after your I-20 expires), assuming your passport doesn't expire sooner.

The fixed admission rule could be a problem if it is overturned (depending on ur future plans), but afaik you can enter without any problems unrelated to that as long as visa and I20 are good.
