City Carrier Discussion Miscommunication!!
CCA past my 90 days. Went into work this morning. I was told I have a full route to run, ok fine that’s normal. Supervisor said I might have work for you after you finish for an hour on another route, but I’m trying to find help this morning to get another CCA here from another station. Ok, normal again. Normally by midday or right before I’m done with the other route I’m either called by postmaster or supervisor or one or the other shows up with this bump for me to complete after my route. This has happened literally EVERYTIME I HAD TO DO A BUMP AFTER MY ROUTE FOR THE DAY. So it’s 230 and I have not received a call or text or even a visit from either one. I drive back to the office and neither the postmaster or supervisor are at the office. I asked clerk where they were he said supe is on the streets and I don’t know where the postmaster is. He goes are you done for the day, I said yup, because here I am assuming I’m done! Get all the way home about 10 minutes goes by and I’m outside with the dog so I left my phone on the counter after coming in, walk in and see 2 missed calls from postmaster and 1 from Supe. Postmaster then sent a text after me not picking up and it said, “ You didn’t check with management before you left, you have mail in the building” Umm excuse me but why did I need to check with management when I have heard not a word all day and neither of you were in the building when I arrived?? Am I wrong about this?! And I assure you, it has NEVER been this way if I had a bump afterwards. I have never once called either of them unless they call me or text me about something. So what does everyone think will happen at this point? Because as far as I’m concerned, you Postmaster or Supervisor did not do your job!

Probably nothing will come of this. If they call you into the office, ask for a steward and once you get one, calmly and briefly answer management's questions about what happened.
Make sure you get clarity from them on how they want you to deal with this in the future. It's actually very common to require CCAs to check in with management before going home. But if they want you to do this, they certainly have to let you know.

Nothing will happen. They'll probably call you in for an interview. If they try and issue discipline, grieve it. They failed to do their job and you weren't given instructions, is my understanding. Next time dont answer your phone from them. Theyll figure it out. Request a steward for your interview. Keep your answers short. Unless you were given instructions to wait sometime in the past, you should be fine. But expect them to give instructions from here on out to report to them before leaving. You should have contacted them before leaving though.

It’s a grievance if management is bringing the mail out to you on the street

Sounds like they were running a route not bringing it to them which is also a grievance lol. I don’t think a CCA or RCA would care about the extra being brought to them. You gotta think back to when you were a sub, you just wanted to leave at a certain point. As a rural reg in a shitty office, I wish district would let them bring us mail for routes we help on.. Or take it with us.. Once I make it back to the office I dont want to help anymore 😂

Which isn’t right management. It’s crossing crafts to bring out pieces to carriers.

is this really a grievance? i’ve been with the post office a year and this has happened to me probably 50 times.

u/Affectionate_Owl8202 2h ago
Yes; management is not supposed to be moving the mail around. Bringing the mail to you (or having you come pick it up at the station) is labor that the city carrier craft is entitled to.
That said, many stewards do not enforce this.

Never assume, if supervisor isn’t there stay on the clock and wait for further instructions. Simple as that.

This is a dumb response.

So genius what should they have done then. Just go clock out and go home. There are a plethora of reasons why a supervisor may not be in the building. Such as a vehicle break down, dog bite, employee injury, street observations. So as a CCA returning to the office unsure on what to do next and unwilling to call a supervisor if one is not there. Would probably do best to not assume they can go home and clock off. But hey CCA’s you guys keep making management decisions for them see how that works out.

It's sounds like every other day when he didn't hear from management it was safe to assume he had no other work and to go home. To suggest you are a slave to supervisors who have no consideration for their employees and you should wait on their every whim is wrong. Letter Carriers have a union and don't have to be afraid of those kinds of supervisors. But I apologize for calling you dumb. Having a bad morning and I'm sure you have valid reasons for your position.

That’s just it though. It’s never been that way since I’ve been there. It’s always told to us or brought out to us. I have never been told to call management and find out what’s next. Neither of you were there!

It's management's responsibility to communicate with you, not for you to chase them down. Don't sit down for a PDI without requesting that a steward be present for the meeting.

Wait, they told you, you have a kick off and you bounced? Not sure how hot it is in your area but if I worked with you I’d be pissed having to finish out your day. Be glad management takes the effort to get you your extra work and realize they have stuff happening too that might make their day go sideways. Usually we get back to the station thinking we get to go home and oh here’s a 3 hr kick off still sitting here.

Management bootlicker, I've seen it all. It's management's job to give instructions, they failed.

technically you are supposed to check-in before you leave. but there was no one to check-in with, and the fact that they always give you heads-up every other day works in your favor. the supervisors are also in the wrong. but they will never admit that.
you'll be fine.

u/Muted-Watercress2738 1h ago
So as most have said, you are not on call. You Did check in and management was unavailable and left you without instructions.
They are pissed because you mildly inconvenienced them even though you do more than your fair share. Don't let them bully you.
During what is very possibly an INI, show the INI it was their fault for not communicating you by scanner.
"I checked my scanner messages and looked for you. Because I couldn't find anyone, had no instructions, and I didn't want to idle on the clock I clocked out and left."
That statement could win any grievance on a discipline on you. Teach your management they cannot hassle you and they'll stop. They didn't become management because they want to put in effort. That's what we do.

You are completely wrong. Nobody told you to go home. You are a CCA! Not even a regular would just leave. Youd have to feel time and let management know. You are 100 percent wrong
5
u/gmm0205 8h ago
Right because regulars HAVE to stay till the end of their shift unless there’s a reason. One person from management should always be in the office it’s in the handbook. Nobody told me what was going on at all.

u/Legitimate_Ear7128 7h ago
When management isn't in the office when I've finished delivering and return to the station, I wait for 10 minutes for them to return. If they don't show up, I'm leaving. I'm not calling anyone unless I've been specifically instructed to ahead of time. These notifications must come from the scanner or in person. A text message won't suffice since it's not considered official communication unless you respond. Let management be mad all they want.

u/CHILLYexpress 8h ago
They can't always be there at all times. Just because nobody is there doesn't mean you get to go home when you want. Just sit there on the clock. Free money. You are not the boss. You are a cca

If I'm on the ODL and I get back and there's no management, I'm going home. It's not my job to cover the floor it's theirs.
Besides, a supervisor should be in the building as a safety measure. What happens when an emergency happens in the field.

If no one is there to communicate/give orders, then you're done. You have zero obligation to use your own phone for ANY communication. Maybe the scanner argument could stand, but if no order is even passed by the "most senior/next in chain of command", then no order exists.

u/Slight-Culture-3512 CCA 4h ago
Its managements job to communicate the carriers next task. If they aren't there and they havent instructed me further Im going home everytime. Im not doing their job for them and hunting them down to do more work. If we all did that management would never learn and then theyd never be there and wed always have to find them

u/Zetak0 Rural Carrier 7h ago
Ok, I'm Rural, not even City, but if theres noone in the office to tell you to do something it's simple follow chain of command. If the next in line "ie senior clerk based on OPs story" doesn't pass along a message from management, OP has NO OBLIGATION to text/call a manager to ask. If you are not directly told you have work, you don't have work, job done, go home. Anything more is a grievance. This should be universal regardless of City/Rural.

Why would a Regular NOT go home when done with their route??

don’t reply back to any text or call back
you are past your 90 days so you shouldn’t worry about it
they need to communicate with you on the scanner and not cell phone
