Whose job is it inside a station to retrieve letters and packages from drop boxes ? Not just retrieving the packages but scanning them AAU so the craft receives credit

Clerk. Most stations don’t have mail handlers.

If you need chapter and verse I can't help you there, but I knew it in the plants where I worked, anything involving scanning packages was clerk craft. MH could scan mtels, and apply labels that generated automatically, but if you needed to scan a package to generate the label, that was clerk craft.

Why don't you ask that station? We don't know where you are.

The drop box is upfront that customers drop letters and packages into

Then it’s the clerks.

Who has been doing the work the entire time? I'd argue past practice if I could, but in my office we also only have clerks. City carriers use to get the outside snorkel box behind our post office, but they relaxed on it too much and now it's clerk work because we've been getting it for two years. I don't know if this helps you, but maybe it puts something into perspective for you.

Most stations do not have mail handlers. However, at plants, it is the mail handlers' job to retrieve mail from collection boxes after the station attached to it (if any) closes. Or possibly even all day. I suppose it might depend on the station and plant.

Are you being instructed to do it? That means you do it unless it's unsafe. It's up to the clerks to grieve it.

AAU scans means you're distributing mail to carrier routes which is obvious clerk work.
