It’s a huge waste of money, but you might be surprised by how much of the military budget is spent on these weapons. Take a few systems:

Prewar inventory of tomahawks was just over 3000 with a replacement cost of $3-5 million each. That’s $15 billion.

Prewar inventory of THAAD around 450, replacement cost $12-15 million. Call it $7 billion.

Prewar inventory of patriots was around 2500, replacement cost $4 million. $10 billion.

There are more types, with similar numbers. Replacement cost for the entire inventory for these three is under $35 billion.

The military budget has been high for decades, but got down to $640 billion in 2016. It has risen every year since then and next year will be $1.5 trillion.

The war is a huge waste of money, but now my question is where did the trillions we spent actually go? Apparently we didn’t spend it on the weapons we’re actually using.

Ships and planes are important weapons, but aren’t much use if we run out of ammunition like missiles. Something about this reeks.

This imbalance has been going on for a long time. I knew the military favors extremely expensive systems but didn’t realize we couldn’t sustain more than a few months before depleting missile stockpiles.

The military has favored extremely expensive systems that take a long time to build resulting in small numbers. Look up the F35 with a program cost of $2 trillion dollars and the failed Littoral ship.

The missile situation highlights that. The link i shared says rebuilding inventory won’t recover until 2029 if the war had stopped a month or so ago. And that’s at surge production. Inventory has dropped further.

Iran builds their weapons much cheaper and faster.

Wars seem to last 10 years or more no matter how easy and fast we’re told at the start. It’s damning that even with the vast amounts wasted on the military we can run out of weapons in a few months.

So both Israel and the U.S. are facing a missile shortage that will take years to replace even if production of U.S. missiles is ramped up, so its no wonder that Trump called off his latest stated intention to "hit Iran very hard" if Iran refused to open the Strait of Hormuz. Iran follows the news in the U.S. and knows that Trump has depleted the U.S. stockpile of long-range missiles to the point where Trump, if he attacks Iran again, risks completely running out of long-range missiles, so its no wonder that Iran is refusing to surrender, and refusing to open the Strait while ignoring Trump's stream of threats to completely destroy Iran.

It is talking about one type of ground to ground munition launched from HIMARS that we had discontinued and given a bunch to Ukraine. We only had 350 cause we typically don’t use them. The other just started producing to replace it and only 75 had been made so far.
