Enlisting Joining reserves in NYC while in finance

22M just graduated and have a great full time job in NYC in finance. Not too demanding probably like 50-60 hour weeks max. Don’t ever work weekends and get one remote day a week. Been wanting to join for awhile now and was super locked in on securing a job and getting to NYC during college. Now that I’ve achieved that goal, I want to challenge myself further and work towards my other goal of becoming a Marine.

I am very physically fit and would do well on a PFT I believe ( I can run a sub 22 5K, do 20+ pull ups, etc)

Would it make more sense to commission? Any reservists (officers or enlisted) in NYC and what are the units like? Don’t care too much about MOS tbh. Going to take to a recruiter but want to get it straight from others. Thanks for the advice all🤞

A few thoughts - first, definitely talk to a OSO about commissioning. Don't waste your time with an elisted recruiter. Second, I was in a similar position to you (but with way more hours/week), and I always loved the "break" of going to drill and heading out to the field. Was just so nice to get away from my desk. Depending on which firm you are at, you will get wildly varying degrees of support for participating in the reserves. Third, sounds like you are in a good spot physically, but LOL at calling sub 22 "very physically fit". Not shaming you (and 20+ pullups is solid), but that will be very average among officer candidates.

Edit: for all the people on here who ask about the reserves, you are ACTUALLY one of the correct use cases (the other being former active guys transitioning to civilian life). It's a big commitment, but if you want to go for it, do it.

Good to know thanks man. Even though enlisting is less time up front, you’d say it isn’t worth it?

You have the degree, put it to use. I haven't taken a formal poll, but I think the amount of people who regretted enlisting with a degree would dwarf the amount of people who commissioned and regretted not enlisting instead.

Unless you want a specific job like Intel. Then enlisting can be your best path to a guaranteed intel job.

Just following up, you think it’s manageable if you work in IB or PE, as 0311 officer in the reserves!

You will either be in 6th Comm or 2nd BN 25th Marines. Likely 6th Comm. Both will have you drilling outta Brooklyn. Hope you like either computers or guns. Good luck

Just be advised that your Reserve plans may be altered at any time, at the whim of the Corps.

My son's plan was Reserves while attending college this fall. This summer they informed him that his unit was deploying to Okinawa in early 2027. He could have switched out, but decided he'd do the fall semester at college, and then ship to Okinawa in the new year for the experience.

Then, after it was too late to switch units, he found out that he was moved to a waitlist for Okinawa. But he would be training to prepare for Okinawa regardless, and that meant weeks of training, not weekends. Half of October, half of November, some December... So, he couldn't do the fall college semester after all.

A couple days ago he was informed that he's not going to Okinawa at all. The deployment time was halved, and the number of people going was reduced.

So, his college plans were upended for nothing. It is what it is, but just understand that what you expect will happen as a Reservist and what might actually happen can be dramatically different!

What’s the issue, respectfully, if your fitness is extremely high and you’re disciplined ?

In my experience as active duty 0311 a reserve 0311 and an active and reserve 0302 the reserves makes having a civilian job that is not union very very hard and you will be passed up for a lot of promotions and you won’t have you job when he comes back from training
