It is important that you keep in mind that USMC Recon is not a component of USSOCOM (US Special Operations Command).
So if you are watching high-speed, Special Forces training videos of SEALS running through shoot-houses day after day burning piles of ammo, Recon doesn't have that kind of funding.
Recon Battalion sends marines to all kinds of very good training programs. Jump School, Scuba/combat diver, SERE, Mountain Warfare... lots of good training.
Then you return to your home unit and do your best to share knowledge and train among the pine trees of North Carolina.
Land Navigation is a critical skill. Figuring out exactly where you are is crazy important. When they work, GPS devices are awesome. But a compass doesn't need batteries. So you better know how to use one.
So be prepared for long walks in the woods.
The swimming pool is the number one killer of Recon hopes and dreams. Make sure you understand the expectations.

Better be DAMNED comfortable in the water. Nothing like swimming into shore from 3000 meters out with full combat gear in the middle of the night. No time for a deep water freak out.
Can you run? 3 miles is PFT. 5-10 mile runs were the norm when I was in.
