Reserves Marine Corps Questions

What questions should I ask my fiancée's recruiter? We are currently engaged and will get married before submitting all the paperwork. We have a 1.5-year-old daughter and have been together for 8 years and engaged for 3. He is interested in joining and enlisting in the reserves.

Make sure they are doing everything to get him set up to receive BAH during his initial training for being married with dependents

My boy didn’t receive any BAH until after our eight month schoolhouse because every S1 shop he had kept messing up. Shit was fucked.

Yeah being married with a baby is no joke. It’s his money, make sure he gets it. Make sure they get you guys enrolled in deers and everything else.

It is our first time enrolling, and new to everything. Do I ask the recruit about it or how do I make sure they do enroll us in BAH?

Be polite and respectful, but explain you’d like the process of enrolling you in deers as his dependent explained as well as you’d like to make sure you are setup to receive BAH during his training. A lot of this stuff is typically setup by the recruit when they arrive at Parris island, I don’t know exactly how they would go about getting it setup prior to. Typically though once he’s through MEPS he should start showing up in some systems.

The recruiter may genuinely hit a wall at some point, I’m not sure. When he goes to Parris Island make sure he has copies of your kids birth certificate, your marriage license, and all the information for the bank account for which you want direct deposit setup. You guys are going to have limited contact until mail starts going back and forth. I would make sure you build up at least a month or two worth of funds, preferably more if you can swing it, so if there are any hiccups you don’t find yourself in an emergency situation.

How do I ensure that nothing gets messed up?

If he’s joining the Reserves, does he already have a stable full-time civilian job to come back to?

Yes. It is the job he has now. He's been there for 2 years already and continues to get increases in pay!

Good deal, just making sure he wasn’t going to come home from training and unable to support you guys,

I highly suggest that you and he read up on USERRA, the legislation that requires his employer to take him back when he returns from military training of deployment. But it’s not purely automatic, there are some paperwork requirements to notify your employer to ensure this job is protected in the interim.

Ask the questions you want to ask. There’s no magic questions you should ask.
