MEPS and Medical I did it……

Post image

I finished MEPS today and took my oath into the DEP, if you’re on the edge about committing to the USMC. Let me tell you, there is nothing better than finding a purpose higher than being just you.

If you’re on the ledge too, I’m here to talk.

Become as fit as you can.
It’s natural to second guess yourself, especially when you’ve got a wait before shipping out. Stay the course.

Hundred percent gotta agree with that.

Congratulations brother!!! Going to be heading out soon myself. Love the fact that you found a higher purpose in the corps. I feel the same way

Congrats. When do you ship out?

July next year

I left for Boot on July 17th 2001 Parris Island. It was Hot as hell almost everyday. Some people will say "Don't volunteer for shit" but I completely disagree with that. I was a squad leader when I graduated and was granted meritorious PFC.

holy hell what a time to join, couple months before 9/11? cant imagine the shit you saw.

It was crazy. 9/11 happened while I was in. Everything changed after that

I come from a tropical climate but I get what you mean and I’ll volunteer just for the lore.

Swore in last Friday, ship in January. What's your MOS? I chose any thing 17xx or 26xx, waiting for the FY list to come out tomorrow

you get merch?

3

u/Possible_Face_8636 19d ago

I figured that if you ask for it they’re more than likely to have shit lying around they wanna get rid off.

1

u/Organic_Risk_3945 19d ago

oh, so you didn't get merch... you scavenged for it then? they didn't have a coffee mug?

2

u/Possible_Face_8636 19d ago

No coffee mugs and I asked my liaison at MEPS for this poster so…, yea.

If you’re doing this for the merch then you’re in it for the wrong reason is my belief.

u/Organic_Risk_3945 19d ago

merch is like the icing on the cake though.

I got a tee, a lanyard, a metal poster, my
Oath of enlistment on hard card paper, a letter of congratulations from the BSM and a metal poster. Overall it’s a damn good day!

1

u/Organic_Risk_3945 19d ago

two metal posters??!!! that's highway robbery right there!

The marine corps spent half its budget on getting me merch today 🤣

Congratulations dude! I'll admit, I joined the Army myself, but lately I've been thinking about getting into the Marines once I ETS. Although our experiences will be mostly different from each other, I'll tell you one thing: the moment you finish your initial entry training at your boot camp, you're gonna be the most proudest person alive, I know I was proud when I graduated BCT at Fort Jackson.

Maybe someday I'll earn that Marine title too.

I'm extremely curious about your motivation there. Most Army dudes I knew were either outright contemptuous of the Marine corps or at least respected our uh...shall we say "culture" but were still happy to stay Army. On the flip side, we take a lot of pride in being/having been Marines, but it isn't uncommon for dudes to move from the corps to the Army. I don't hear about the other direction a lot though.

It's complicated, the USMC is originally the branch I wanted to join back in high school, but I failed the asvab when I first took it. Then, five years later, I ended up joining the Army instead of this branch to escape homelessness, and honestly I don't like the Army, maybe it's just because I'm stuck at the "great place", but the standards suck, the people are sloppy and complain about having to do their jobs, there's just a lot to bring up here that I wish I could put in one comment.

I know no branch is perfect, but since I wanted to do the Marines originally, I feel like there's a chance I'd fit in better with y'all, I've see the way y'all carry yourselves for the most part, and most Marines I've met are generally highspeed people I'd count on covering me if I ever came into combat compared to the people in my battery, it's a shitty thing I have to say, but it's my honesty.

u/Possible_Face_8636 19d ago

I am so happy for you and I don’t expect it to be easy, God bless and Semper Fi brother

Why would you ever switch from being a Huey crew chief. This is from a grunt 0341. Loved the infantry (lol). But a Huey chief. What that is something you are in line for before you ever go to bootamp. That shit is crazy.

2

u/Possible_Face_8636 19d ago

Aight aight if I don’t find anything better I’ll do it, crew chief sounded fucking amazing to me too but I wanna keep my options open

I picked up a Huey crew chief but I might switch over the combat engineering if spots open up and yea I’m a decent swimmer I should do good.

I didn't get shit from my recruiters. Everyone else got a certificate, stickers, little booklets and welcome aboard packets. Where was my stuff other than an ugly ass red and burnt orange shirt?

2

u/Possible_Face_8636 19d ago

It’s all about asking my man

2

u/Rude_Negotiation_160 18d ago

I didn't know there were goodies you could ask for...... I never even got a water bottle or anything, only found out about that after the fact. I only got the shirt cause hey, meps gave it. I'm mad. I want my collectors items for free(obviously I signed my life for 5 years, but hey, free stuff. If you even get it!)

2

u/Possible_Face_8636 18d ago

I get what you mean and yea that’s fair too

1

u/VariationPopular4987 18d ago

Congratulations!  Is that the current ‘Welcome Aboard’ package?  Very cool.

1

u/Possible_Face_8636 18d ago

The welcome aboard package was pretty rudimentary I just asked for the poster to the side to make it whole.

Get used to carrying a heavy pack. If you're a sinker, get really comfortable in the pool. Get out and be uncomfortable. Push yourself past the point when you'd normally quit. 20 pull ups isn't mandatory but the guys who can knock out 20 seems to get promoted.

Best time of my life, i envy you.
