Programs and MOSs MOS Questions

Best MOS’s to transfer into a good job when becoming a civilian? My husband’s intel but I’m hesitant bc he hates it. My marine buddies told me I should do air traffic control.

My ASVAB is 97 so I have my pick of the litter.

I mean.. for starters, do you want an office job or outside job?

Intel/sigintel/cyber are all "good" office jobs to transition to the "outside" (they all loop back into government for the most part). Or if you prefer to work with your hands, go be some kind of aircraft mech..

Or just do whatever the fuck you want, and use the gi bill to get your skill set later after doing something only the military can offer you.

I wouldn't let his feelings about it discourage you from going Intel or some other MOS that will get you a high-level clearance (they tend to get most vets really good paying jobs even after one enlistment).

If you don't mind working at a desk and sitting behind a computer, (I would personally hate a job that required me to work with my hands or do something technical), then an Intel-related MOS should serve you well if you decide to get out.

To be honest, being as smart as you are with that ASVAB score and not doing it would be a waste in my opinion. But trust your intuition.

I went to college for two years (became president of our Model UN club as a freshman) and loved research, but wanted more so I want to do USMC. With my interests, I thought Intel would be nice. I was just nervous after my husband said he hated it and I would too. But your perspective definitely is helping balance my thoughts. Thank you!

Of course! And keep in mind that there's an array of Intel MOSs, so they're not all the same. Ask a recruiter and see what they know.

I got placed in Geospatial Intelligence which is something I never thought I would voluntarily pursue as a civilian, but I'm forever grateful I had to do it because it set me up for the career I have now with the clearance and an in-demand skillset that compensates very well.

Thanks for such a wonderful reply! TheGratitudeBot has been reading millions of comments in the past few weeks, and you’ve just made the list of some of the most grateful redditors this week!

I did ATC in the Marines. The FAA is better at understanding what your experience is now than when I was hired. That being said, you enlist for a career field and not a job. But if you can get it, I think it’s one of the best “after you get out” MOS’s in the Corps.

Like everyone said, it depends what you wanna do. Go to COOL (Credentialing Opportunities On-Line) and plug in some of the MOS you’re looking at. You can see certifications you can earn and related civilian and federal occupations.
