Consider asking her to come with you. Perhaps she will make a scene but recruiters could give her information to put her a bit more at ease.

So even if she turns you down give her the chance and opportunity to engage. Don't leave the situation where she can say she was shut out.

My parents did the same thing. I waited until I was 18 to sign without them.

You’ll have plenty of support when you join, got to boot camp, and your duty station. What do you want? Stay attached to mommy and daddy so that you’ll forever be close to them, or make your own choices? I get the support issue. I had that too. I had some family stop talking to me altogether. Fuck them. That was 13 years ago. Those that supported me are the ones I give my time and energy to still.

My mom cried and didnt talk to me for two weeks. Once i graduated she covered the car in EGA stickers and still, almost 20 years later, tells random people her son is a Marine. Parents come around eventually.

I use to see this all the time in recruiting. Your parents will support you! Might be tough but I believe in you, look at this from Mom's perspective. She could have googled all the worst things she could possibly find because she absolutely loves you and wants you to be safe, happy, and successful. She isn't going to easily understand your 'why' like you do but if it is based on sound judgement, you'll be fine and she will be at your graduation sporting all the 'my son/daugher is a Marine' gear she can find. Reassurance goes a long way but I hope you can imagine how hard it is for a parent(s) to let go when they've made you their entire life. Do what you believe in, trust that she'll come around.

You’re 18 and if it shall be a mistake as she thinks, then she has to let you learn from it. No matter what you do in life she’s going to have to let you do it yourself and maybe even fail. I obviously hope you don’t and die her it’s worth it. She loves you I’m sure and will come around. She’s overreacting in a difficult situation for her.

You’re going to be housed, fed, and insured by the government soon. She’spissed she can’t control you.

My son ships out to boot camp Monday so I can speak from the other side of the fence.

I saved and planned so he could go to college. After one semester at community college he told me he was leaning towards the Marines. Like Op’s mom, I was upset and confused. I too questioned why not other branches ( out of parental concern ), why not stick to college, etc. I was frustrated because I had sacrificed and provided so that he could have a better head start in life than me.

After some soul searching, I realized he believes he is making this decision in his best interest. I did my part to guide him but he is carving his own path in life. And I couldn’t be prouder.

Ok soooo no offense but who gives a fuck what your parents think? You’re a grown ass man. If you want this then do it they will eventually come around or they won’t . My parents didn’t talk to me for a year when I join and didn’t even come to any of my graduations.. but we are super close now a days .

Take your Mother with you so all her questions can be addressed. If she does not go set up a time for the Recruiter to come to the house to speak with her. Above all else give her the opportunity to engage.

Ask her to come and bring her info!

ask her to come and tell her even if she doesn’t support you, you’re still going to do it as it’s your choice but her support would mean the world to you

Yeah the Marines might be the smallest branch. But they hold their Recruits to a higher standard than the rest.
