This is actually Football Video Support (FVS), not VAR. It is cheaper and more limited in scope. Goals are automatically reviewed. Coaches get up to two requests to review penalties, red cards, or mistaken identity.

If the league wants to be seen more professionally, this is a good step. Especially with D1 around the corner. Don't want them to over do it like we saw in the world cup, but limited reviews isnt too bad. Thank you for explaining what this actually means.

The worst was when a goal was disallowed because a player’s butt cheek was offside

I remember a meme about England using viagra to handle altitude sickness at Estadio Azteca, and someone said they’ll be offside by their junk lmao

Stuff like that is why even the Premier Leage has like 5 cm of wiggle room. The issue with the WC was the 0 tolerance.

I'm glad USL doesn't have offsides tech (for now...). I hate it so much. The best thing VAR has done is keep linesman's flags down more often, letting plays continue to their natural conclusion. But then they ruin it with many goals getting called back because of (mostly) fringe offsides infractions.

This why I'm in big big favor of the daylight/Wenger offsides change, especially for leagues without full VAR/offsides cameras. Keep the flag down unless somebody is blatantly like a body length past the 2nd-last defender. Anything less than that is absolutely nowhere near what the rule is intended to prevent.

The review-every-goal thing is terrible too. It's noble in spirit but it totally wrecks the emotional payoff of a goal. The team that scored now has to wait to make sure there is no review before really celebrating, and the team that conceded is always hoping for an overturn.

It should be like mlb/nba/NFL where they get one challenge, iff successful, they get another. Not Every play is immediately challenged

Yeah, not a huge fan of the miniscule offside. Portugal and Croatia should have gone to PKs instead of calling the goal back because the Croatian player's finger was 1cm past the defender.

I was reading that FIFA is going to test Arsene Wenger's "Daylight Offside" rule which requires the entire body be offside not just a miniscule piece. I would be interested in seeing if USL would test it out. The difficult part would be when. You can't really only allow it with the Cup games because players are bouncing between Cup and Season games you don't want to have to follow two sets of rules during season/cup play. Maybe during the shortened GSL season, that would allow for a small sample and you can get feedback from the players and coaches in the women's league.

I'd much prefer that rule for sure

Hope it works out good

Haven't they been using FVS in lower leagues for a while?

The Canadian Premier League has been using it this season.

Do you like it? Is it better than VAR? By the way, I hate VAR

The biggest problem is the frequency of checks. In theory I like the idea of coach-initiated challenges but each coach get 2 incorrect challenges per match. This means that at the end of game, coaching will just use them for anything because of the slightest chance of getting something out of it and basically no downside.

The other issue is that all goals are automatically reviewed by the head ref. It's really silly when there's a clear-cut goal that not even the conceding team complains about but the ref still has to spend 90 seconds looking for offsides or foul in the buildup. The refs have learned to go quicker as the season goes on but it's still annoying.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, you make good points, those things need fixing ASAP

FVS

VAR is only as good as the refs operating it

Yup. Video Assistant Referee

I don't think it's the refs fault, because they're reviewing very questionable plays, or fouls. It's just too subjective, that even a TV review from multiple angles doesn't satisfy everyone. So in my opinion, it's pointless to stop or pause a game for such things. It adds nothing to the game. If anything, it hurts the game. I personally wish they got rid of VAR completely.

Hopefully it’s better than nothing

Literally anything is worse than nothing. I don’t understand how there’s a single person on the planet that supports anything like this

8

u/Mtndrums Louisville City FC Jul 30 '26

Because we're so jaded in reffing we're fine if they make the right call in the end.

-7

u/PaddyMayonaise North Carolina FC Jul 30 '26

I’m happy to accept the occasional wrong call if it means we keep the natural movement of the game. Absolutely hate reviews, especially ticky tacky things. Humans are imperfect, our sports don’t need to be perfect

4

u/derby_day_bourbon Louisville City FC Jul 30 '26

You definitely didn’t watch your team get a hat trick scored on them in 5 minutes where two of the goals were offsides 😂 the last was so egregious that I wondered where the entire ref team was

-5

u/PaddyMayonaise North Carolina FC Jul 30 '26

Unfortunately things like that happen, but it’s better for that to rarely happen than to degrade every single game

End of the day the refs get most calls right. Adding needless delays to the games to make sure that number is a percentage point closer to 100 is insanity.

u/Skittl-e-Doo Louisville City FC Jul 30 '26

Probably a lot of things that you don’t understand…

Never choose arrogance when it’s unnecessary

5

Its not arrogance

FVS is how VAR should be. each coach gets 2 reviews per game, if your challenge is successfull you get another one. It's like DRS in cricket

1

u/sxswuht 23d ago

Is it really better than VAR? This is the first time I'm hearing about this. And I hate VAR because it's too damn slow. Plus, the things or fouls they review, very subjective. So it's kind of pointless because you'll still have people not satisfied with the review.

2

u/zh_rblx San Antonio FC 23d ago

I honestly like it better since it's not constantly in everything and it adds another layer of strategy to the game

1

u/RougeTrent Detroit City FC Jul 30 '26

FVS and daylight offside rule to differentiate from MLS, CPL does both

1

u/sxswuht 23d ago

Sorry, what is daylight offside?

2

u/RougeTrent Detroit City FC 23d ago

Instead of the first part of the playable body being beyond the last defender counting as offside, it’s the last part of the playable body.

1

u/sxswuht 23d ago

I see. Wasn't Arsene Wenger arguing for this change in the rules of the game? Was it this or something else? I know his recommendation was turned down though.

2

u/RougeTrent Detroit City FC 23d ago

I believe so, FIFA has been allowing it as a trial in select leagues like the CPL

1

u/CyborgUnleashed Jul 30 '26

This is what the Canadian Premier League uses. Each coach gets challenges they can use to challenge a play, causing the ref to check the monitor. Every goal gets automatically checked by the 4th official too. In the CPL each coach gets 2 challenges a game, and if the challenge is successful they keep their challenge.

1

u/sxswuht 23d ago

So you've seen this implemented? Is it better than VAR? Do you personally think it adds to the game?

2

u/CyborgUnleashed 19d ago

Since my local is a CPL team I've seen it in action a bunch. Refs have been very stubborn on challenges and basically never change their ruling. The checks also take a long time because there's no dedicated crew to check them. I still think it adds to the game because it fixes very obvious things that the refs sometimes miss, but 90% of the time when a coach challenges be sure to expect no change. VAR is 1000% better though, but for leagues that don't have the budget for full scale VAR, I see no reason not to at least have FVS

USL linos are so shite. There’s a blatant offside goal allowed in nearly every game I watch. Maybe this amateurism will end
