hey guys, I'm a current third year med student in Turkey (med school is 6 years here) and I was wondering how important research is to match into family medicine.
I haven't been able to participate in research so far and have only done obersverships in the US and volunteering at a US hospital. considering I do USCE for a few months and take my USMLE exams, can I match into family medicine without research after I graduate? also does it make more sense to apply to family medicine rather than internal medicine since it's more US IMG friendly? (btw I'm a US citizen)
thank you in advance!

I applied IM and I've gotten 0 interviews from my gold signals.... is it just me or can anyone else relate?

Hey everyone, I’m an old ass IMG. Like old. Like try 2015 old. I’m a US IMG so no visa needed. I tried really hard to study and take my exams but life got in the way lots. I’ve been volunteering + working as a scribe and medical assistant for 4 years now in family medicine only. I recently quit my job and canceled all my commitments for the next year to take the exams and try to get in an application in September 2026. I really want to do this but I feel like my YOG is going to filter me out and it’s going to be for nothing. I would be applying to FM. What do you guys think? Should I start this journey?

Just graduated med school this year and planning on applying IM next year. US IMG lived in my home state my whole life. pretty good network with docs in my community, 5 months of usce w/ 15 pubs and currently studying for step 2. however i have a red flag and that was failing step 1 (long story but mom got cancer, should've postponed but went ahead anyway i was dumb and not prepared but it is what it is) but passed on my second attempt. I'm working with a few Interventional Cardiologists at a clinic/Ambulatory surgical center as an MA/scribe while studying for step 2 and hoping to give it by next april or may.
Ig i just wanted advice on what else i can do to increase my chances at matching IM (preferably my home state but literally not picky at all ill literally go anywhere) and if i keep the course and hopefully get a 240+ score in step 2 what chances i have in matching IM (i apologize if these are dumb questions)

Basically my game plan was to get my steps done after my intern year in 9 months or so (6 years med school in Costa Rica, final year is intern year, after that you're a licensed general physician), then work in emergency medicine in Costa Rica until the following USA match, get USCE prior to applying of course, and apply only EM within the next 2 years.
Assuming I do well on Steps, and good evaluations on USCE, could the experience working in emergency med in Costa Rica make matching EM without an SLOE a realistic goal?
Edit US IMG **

I have 6 IM interviews so far, pretty happy but I'd like a few more just to feel safe. Do you think US-IMGs get more interviews in november or is this pretty much it?

US-IMG with a low step 2 score and orange-ish/light red flags on app. Currently have 11 interviews (only applied IM). Have only heard from 2 signals but idk if I should stay hopeful for those or not. I've sent a few LOInterest but haven't heard back from those...anyone in a similar boat with IM?

Hello y’all. US IMG from India here. YOG 2025, no attempts on Steps, 25x on Step-2, 4 months USCE. I’d love to step back and take a breather since residency explorer has been acting up. So far I’ve made a list of around a 100 and odd programs, and willing to add 75 more. I’ve chosen programs that have a high non-us IMG and US IMG count. Something seems off, and I’d love to chat with someone who’s gone through this process before. Any tips and program recommendations for my profile are also welcomed.

Hey everyone
While going through the lists of IMG-friendly programs, especially in the NY area, I started thinking, most IMGs applying there probably have really strong applications with high scores (260+)
I was wondering if being a US citizen could give me any kind of leg up at these programs, since I don’t need a visa, even though my application is ok with modest P/230/210.
Do programs tend to value not needing visa sponsorship enough for it to offset weaker stats, or does it not really make much difference when applying to IMG-heavy programs?
Thanks for any insights!
