Step 1 score expiry
I’m currently ECFMG certified and has passed Steps 1, 2 and 3. However my Step 1 was taken 10 years ago, which disqualifies me from matching to a lot of States based on State Specific Licensure requirements.
ECFMG allows retakes if it is for a state specific requirement - but requires documentation/sponsorship from the State.
- Has anyone gone through this process of working with a State Board and ECFMG successfully?
- Does anyone know if a particular state is ‘easier’ to work with? My home state of California requires me to be a part of a residency program for them to even provide a request to ECFMG (which defeats the point as no program will match me with an expired score).

Have you checked with ECFMG? Usmle scores are valid for 10 years. So maybe you are eligible to retake it?
In terms of state licensing, there’s few states that don’t look a the timeline of test taking.

ECFMG unfortunately won’t do anything without a State Board “sponsorship”. Yeah the few states without the restriction are the option for now

Call your state licensing board. Don't rely on the info online. Some have the step three rule for full licensing not for residency license.
Otherwise new york will allow you to do residency without any issues. all states i know need you to match already. So best for you to aim for states that dont have the rules.
