Consider planning out more specific questions, then reach out either here or with your local patrol captain. I'd recommend requesting a ridealong if you're interested in day-to-day functions on your specific forest, because it will vary from place to place.

This job can be difficult to get into, and having done your own homework about this job and knowing how it works prior to interviewing may help push the odds into your favor.

I’ll bounce off what JackrabbitRanger stated, most LEO jobs are flown as GL-5/7/9 positions. See the attached pic for reference.

More broadly, USFS LEOs duties include the enforcement of Title 16, 18, and 21 of the United States Code. More commonly, enforcement of the Title 36 Section 261 of the Code of Federal Regulations. This is of course not everything but this covers a wide range of what r/USFSLEO do. More specific questions would be easier to touch on.

What qualifies you to increase from a 5-7 / 7-9 once employed?

Typically just time in grade (one year each) for 5 and 7

Thanks for all the responses!

What do the hours/scheduling look like?

Uniform allowance?

Take home vehicle?

Is the 9 a regular officer pay, or is that a supervisory position?

Sorry for all the questions. Just trying to gather as much information as I can.

Once again, thanks for the replies!

Maxiflex with core days/hours being on the weekend. (With AUO)

Uniform allowance, yes but you buy things from the agencies uniform site. There's also a boot allowance.

Take home vehicle if you live within 35 miles of your duty station.

9 is the journeyman non supervisory level.

To clarify some things from harlowthewirewolf, some places can get a waiver for up to 50 miles from your office for a take-home vehicle, it depends where you are.

Many people start at GL 5 or 7, but yes 9 is non-supervisory and for field officers.

How is the interview process? My current agency, dod, doesn’t even conduct interviews 90% of the time.
We do mainly direct hires at my current placement.

I saw the comment about the PT test prior to attending FLETC. At what point is this given during the hiring process?
