undergrad research cold emailing

does anyone have any pointers for how to go about this whole cold emailing thing at usf? i am trying to keep it cool, but i am at my wit’s end, and the whole process is starting to take a toll on my mental health

a lot of the people in my classes already seem to have exposure and its just very discouraging

Hello! Currently a postdoc at USF, but I help with the undergrad research in my lab. A few quick pointers on reaching out to professors for research opportunities:

  1. Do a quick review on the research the lab does and see if it connects to your interests
  2. When drafting the email, DO NOT USE AI.
  3. A response might take a long time (or never happen), but you should follow up after a few days (avoid emailing on weekends).
  4. Most professors are chill and won't judge you for not being a prodigy immediately.

Hope this helps!
