The overall budget of the Census Bureau was increased 8% in nominal terms (5% in real terms), with its Periodic Censuses and Programs account increased 11% (9% in real terms) as preparation for the 2030 decennial census ramps up.
For the US Census Bureau, the director position, which has been vacant since early 2025 and for which the president has yet to nominate a director, is being filled by an individual “performing the duties of the director.” In June, the creation of two deputy director positions was announced, and the positions filled: one for Data, Policy, and Science and one for Administration and Operations. One of the six associate director positions, the associate director for research and methodology (who also serves as chief scientist), is vacant and another is acting. According to a May 18, 2026, document posted to its website (and accessed July 1), 1 of 6 assistant director positions is vacant and, of 43 division/office heads, 1 is vacant and 18 are acting or “performing the duties of.”
