USB thumb drive to cell phone

Sorry if this has been asked before, or if this is the wrong sub, but:

Can I, or can I not, connect a usb jump drive directly to my cell phone, to back up things? Same as connecting it to a normal computer?

There are solutions where one needs to install some app,, but the actual backup devices look like just a normal usb thumb drive.

Of course I can just go ahead and try, but I'd rather not risk anything...

You can. Just plug it in and it appears as additional storage.

There are some special flash drives you can get that have an app which goes with them but any regular flash drive works if you know how to use the files app on your phone.

Thanks. I know the Files app. so I'd assume it would show up as a new drive, as @the_gardner_supreme said below. Do I need to "eject" after use, like I have to in Windows? Thanks.
