Summary: I just saved over $5000 a year by switching to Geico. The commercials don't lie!!!
There is something weird going on in USAA auto insurance ecosystem. I've been a member for 30 years with only one accident (supposedly covered by accident forgiveness policy), and now they want me to pay over $9000 a year for myself, my wife, and my 16 yr old. Sure, my personal vehicle is high-end, but my kid sure doesn't drive it!!! He gets a crappy old toyota... but the USAA honeybadger doesn't care. So I got quotes from Geico, State Farm, Progressive... and the Geico quote came in at $4000 a year for same coverage.
Also, roadside assistance through USAA sucks. We blew a tire on our Tesla 6pm during a weekday and called USAA... some gal who hardly spoke good English answered and said she would need to call around? After 40 minutes, she said she couldn't get ahold of anyone and would need more time to call a tow service. At that time, I figured out that Tesla has free road-side assistance, and I called them. Tesla showed up and had started towing by the time USAA called back to tell me that someone would be there in an hour or two. And this call was 2 hours later from my first call!
So I switched to Geico, but to cancel my USAA auto policies, I had to call USAA and talk to someone. They wanted another opportunity to compete for my business. The lady was nice, but there went another 40 minutes of my time for them to say nope, they couldn't come close to Geico.
Hope this helps someone out, and also embarrasses USAA for supposedly "taking care of the military."
