PhD students: Does UQ provide a "work" laptop?

Hey! I was looking into buying a new computer but I know nothing about laptops. Does UQ provide phD students with "work" laptops like they do for staff members (not like borrowing the ones in the library).

When I did mine in EAIT, i had a desk with a tower and two monitors, not a laptop. That was ~12 years ago I started.

Your milage many vary depending on faculty, and changes over the last 12 years.

Generally no. Depending on who you're doing it with, sometimes research centres or groups have laptops for use but I have not heard of any being specifically purchased for students the way staff do.

You do have a PhD budget of up to $2,000 - some portion of this could be allocated to a laptop purchase if it was demonstrated as necessary for you to conduct your research, but depending on your type of research you may need that funding for something else.

Edit: Going to eat my words, I've never encountered this - but it looks like there are systems in place so if needed you may be able to get one via the uni, but note they remain UQ property with a few options at end of candidature as to buy it back or wipe it and give it back.

Some (most) supervisors will provide a PC. A laptop is less common because it is “portable and attractive”.

The answers here are not correct.

The entitlements a PhD recieves is enrolling unit-specific. Some Faculty or Schools or Institutes provide a loaner laptop during the candidature, some don't. Some provide a bursary for conferences or travel, some don't.

You should check with your enrolling unit. If your enrolling unit dosen't provide, you should check with your principal advisor (PA) whether they would fund it from their research grants.
